Faculty FAQs: Concluding a Canvas Course What happens at the end of the semester? Your course will be "concluded" 2-3 weeks after the end of finals period. This means the content will be in an archival state.
After a Canvas course's term has ended, the course becomes read-only for enrolled students. Instructors can no longer add or remove members using the People tool, send messages to students in the course, or edit course content.
Discussions are often used to promote student interaction and exchange of ideas, in online and hybrid courses. Canvas Discussions can be ungraded, graded, assigned to groups, and even peer reviewed.

You cannot send messages to users in concluded courses.
Concluded courses are courses that are completed according to the SIS information or term dates, or courses that have been manually marked complete by an instructor or administrator.
Courses can be concluded manually by clicking the "Conclude" button in a course's "Settings" area. Manually concluded courses are still visible to all participants, but cannot be modified (this can be undone by an administrator).

@harry_rubin , instructors are not notified and do not see conversation messages between students. In that sense, they are private. However, Canvas admins at your institution could access messages in a student's account, and just like anything else, messages can be captured with a screenshot and shared.
To access a Canvas site for a past course, please log into Canvas, click on the Courses tab, and then click on the View All Courses link. On the next page under “Past Enrollments,” you will be able to view your past courses.
If a course is defined by term, course, or section dates, all enrollments are automatically concluded as defined by the term, course, or section end date. A course can also be manually concluded at any time, which affects all enrollments.
Once a course is concluded, if you do not want students to view prior course content, you can restrict students from viewing prior courses. You can also restore an enrollment if necessary.
However, as an instructor you may need to conclude an individual enrollment before the end date. Concluding an enrollment allows the user to view a course in read-only mode. This means the user will be able to access the course but not be able to submit assignments, participate in discussions, or send/receive conversation messages in the course.
Courses in Canvas are sorted and managed by terms which are pre-determined durations of times and dates; as a result Canvas is designed to conclude courses following the end of the academic term. When a course is concluded, it will become read-only, thus content on the course site cannot be edited or contributed to unless it is unconcluded. Concluding a course once a term has ended offers several benefits such as reducing any clutter within the Courses menu tab accessed within the Global Navigation (dark blue menu bar) in Canvas for students, admins, and faculty.
One important thing to note when concluding courses that is not explicitly visible upon conclusion, is that not only is the site itself concluded, but the enrollments within the course are also concluded--what does this mean?

Students only see assignments and details assigned to their section. When using differentiated assignments, the assignment appears as one column in Grades for all students, and grade cells are grayed out for any student not included in the assignment.
Adding TAs. In Canvas, you can assign teaching assistants to specific sections in a course and limit their access to those sections only. When you restrict TAs to their assigned section (s) only, they will not be able to see or grade students in other sections of your course.

If you simply need to solicit your students’ opinion on a topic, without initiating a full-scale conversation, the Canvas Discussion tool can also be used to generate a survey for your students.
Canvas Discussions only allow one topic or thread per Discussion item, but in return they offer some powerful features to promote student interaction.
