Users display in the Inbox once they have an active enrollment in the course, and users cannot join a course unless it is published. You cannot send messages to users in concluded courses.

In Canvas, at the end of the semester your "old" course sites may disappear from your dashboard and your current courses list. This happens only once a course is completedand the term has ended according to the academic calendar end date.

@harry_rubin , instructors are not notified and do not see conversation messages between students. In that sense, they are private. However, Canvas admins at your institution could access messages in a student's account, and just like anything else, messages can be captured with a screenshot and shared.
