Most college and university courses are three semester credit hours (SCH) or 45-48 contact hours, so they usually meet for three hours per week over a 15-week semester.
Students who qualify for graduation must complete at least 14 credits of institute courses: 4 Cornerstone courses (8 total credits) and 3 elective courses (6 total credits). To complete a course, students must satisfy (1) attendance, (2) assigned course reading, and (3) Elevate Learning Experience (ELE) requirements.

Unlike religion credit from another CES school, which transfer with letter grades, institute credits transfer with pass/fail grades and therefore do not count towards the graded credits needed for admissions to BYU.

Who can attend? All young adults ages 18 to 30 are encouraged to attend and graduate from institute. Young adults who have already graduated are welcome to continue to attend as it meets their situation and needs. Adult religion classes are available for those over 30.
Seminary is a worldwide, four-year religious educational program for youth ages 14 through 18. It is operated by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints but is open to teenagers of all faiths.
An institute is an organisational body created for a certain purpose. They are often research organisations (research institutes) created to do research on specific topics, or can also be a professional body.
When young adults actively participate in institute, they increase their commitment to the Savior as they have spiritual experiences focused in the scriptures. Institute provides an opportunity to find relevant answers to life's questions while learning from and sharing with others who are in similar circumstances.
Graduation from BYU (and all CES institutions, such as BYU–Idaho, BYU–Hawaii, and institutes of religion) requires completion of 14 credit hours of approved religious education courses. All BYU students must complete eight credit hours of the Cornerstone Courses and six elective credit hours prior to graduation. The Cornerstone Courses include:
Transfer students must fulfill the BYU graduation requirements, including residency hours in religion.
In order to provide students with the foundational skills and resources for academic and career success, and assure a “smart start” to the Excelsior academic experience, Excelsior College is implementing a Cornerstone course requirement.
The Cornerstone course must be taken at Excelsior College and cannot be transferred in.
This policy applies to students who enroll in an undergraduate degree program on or after November 1, 2019.
