Typically, a course code includes a letter or number for each specific department; a letter or number for each specific subject (i.e., American history in the history/social studies department OR biology in the science department.)
A coarse code is a concept that comes from connectionist cognitive science. It is an example of a distributed representation that has been discovered by some network trained to do a task. In a coarse code, an individual hidden unit represents a particular kind of property, but does so quite inaccurately.
“Subject Code” is a three or four-letter code used in SLU's curriculum management schema to identify generally the discipline or subject matter of a course (e.g., CHEM, NURS, MATH). ▪ A subject code is explicitly not a department code. Multiple subject codes may be assigned to courses from a single department.
A course is a series of classes. These classes are all in one area of study. Therefore, when choosing a major, you will take courses geared towards that major. Courses are assigned credits. Colleges dictate how many credits you need to take to graduate.

Courses are designated by two numbers, separated by a colon. The first number refers to the department or area of the course; the second number refers to the specific course. For example, in the course designated 600:111 the "600" refers to the Department of Art and the "111" refers to the course.
A course is "a series of lectures or lessons in a particular subject, typically leading to a qualification." A class is "a course of instruction."
A course description is. a short, pithy statement which informs a student about the subject matter, approach, breadth, and applicability of the course.
Course descriptions provide brief narratives, which outlines a broad scope of course context rather than being an exact outline of content. Schools identify the North Dakota content standards taught and may explore, develop, and implement activities and programs that go beyond these descriptions as they strive to prepare their students to be Choice Ready. Instructional decisions related to areas of curriculum selection and development, implementation, and assessment are choices made by local school districts.
High School Credit Prior to 9th grade. Schools may elect to award high school credit to students who complete high school courses before entering Grade 9 if the course is equivalent to its high school counterpart and taught by a highly qualified teacher.
After reviewing all the information, the SCC makes the final decision. If approved, the course information is provided to the Education Standards and Practices Board for review. They determine what level of training/education the teacher requires in order to be highly qualified to teach the course.
NDDPI reviews and processes requests three times a year. Due dates for submitting new course code requests are as follows:
The course access program is a catalog of courses approved by the state board offered by a provider other than a student’s home LEA. This program was established by the “The Course Access Program Act” in 2016 and will be implemented based on the parameters set forth in state board rule 0520-01-14. All providers and courses will be reviewed by the department and the state board of education based on a specific set of criteria prior to being included in the catalog.
Special course applications are required for all high school elective courses intended to meet the unique needs of a school or district that cannot be met using the courses and standards included in the Approved High School Courses Policy and listed in the online course catalog .
Any public school student in grades 7–12 is eligible to participate at least two course access courses. Student enrollment will be facilitated by, and at the discretion of, a student’s home LEA. Courses can be offered online, in person, or as a combination of both.
Virtual schools are public schools that “use technology to deliver a significant portion of instruction to students via the Internet in a virtual or remote setting” (T.C.A. 49-16-203). Virtual schools must comply with the same law, rules, and regulations as traditional public schools on curriculum standards, class size, length of the school day and school year, regular student assessments, and teacher qualifications.

Polk Innovative Learning Academy. Florida Virtual School. Students will be able to participate in course access courses beginning in January 2021. This first round of courses will be recommended to the State Board of Education in November 2020.
News and Updates. The course code catalog for 2020-2021 school year will be published on Jan. 15 so that districts can begin student scheduling for the 2020-21 school year. Because attributes are not part of the 12-character SCED Identifier, they may be implemented differently according to the needs of each LEA or SEA.
Unlike “honors” or “advanced” classifications, a course’s designation as AP or IB is not at the discretion of the school, LEA, or SEA using SCED. Treatment of Foreign Language Courses: SCED does not include every language other than English that could be taught.
The subject of the course is identified by the first three characters of the course code. The first character identifies the department area.

The sixth character for course characteristics is optional and is used to distinguish the course or its delivery method. Examples may include “I” for Immersion, “R” for Regular, and “V” for E-learning.
The purpose of the common course codes is to provide consistency on high school students’ transcripts across school districts. The Common Course Codes will be reviewed and updated by the Department of Education on an annual basis.
Within the Infinite Campus district edition, there are two validation reports that can be ran to verify that all your courses have an appropriate state course code. See the Student Data Collections Desk Guide for further details. This will help identify courses within your system that have expired state course codes or no state course codes.
The Department of Education has implemented the use of common course codes in two systems, the Personnel Record Form System and Infinite Campus.
December 1: If new course code is identified, the new code will be added to Infinite Campus and communication will be sent out to districts.
Elementary and Middle School Course: Infinite Campus requires a state code for all courses. Therefore, to get elementary and middle school courses to save within the Infinite Campus system enter the word "Bypass" into the State Course Code field. Elementary and middle school state codes HAVE NOT been added to Infinite Campus at this time and that is why they appear on the excel document with a N in the "Used in Infinite Campus" column.
Transcript Information. The department requires that districts use the State common course codes on a students’ high school transcript. Districts have the flexibility to keep local course titles and descriptions, if the course content aligns with the intent of the course and course descriptions.
