Choosing Classes Being enrolled in 12 units is considered full-time. You must be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units to be a full-time student. Most classes at UC San Diego (UCSD) are 4.0 quarter units. You must complete at least 36 units in each academic year to comply with the minimum progress regulation.

If you wish to switch sections of a course, it is considered a drop and add transaction, all drop/ add/ change deadlines apply. Requests to add classes after Week 1 are not guaranteed.
Requests to add classes after Week 2 are not guaranteed. Check with the academic department offering the course for specific guidelines. Submit a request through EASy, giving enough time to be approved by 4 p.m. on Friday of the final week of instruction.
Upon arrival, students should meet with the Undergraduate Advisor in the Structural Engineering Department to plan a program of study. The undergraduate advisor can be contacted through the Virtual Advising Center (vac.ucsd.edu) as well as by appointment.
For graduation each student must satisfy general-education course requirements determined by the student’s college, as well as the major requirements determined by the department. The colleges at UCSD require widely different general-education courses, and the number of such courses differs from one college to another.
Specific course requirements for the major are outlined in the table below. In addition to the required major courses, a suggested scheduling of general education courses are distributed in the curricula for students to use to meet college requirements.
SE students may take SE 199, Independent Study for Undergraduates, under the guidance of an SE faculty member. Taking SE 199s may not replace ABET approved courses. This course is taken as an elective on a P/NP basis.
It is the policy of the Jacobs School of Engineering not to approve double majors within engineering. The Department of Structural Engineering supports that policy.
When planning their program, transfer students should be mindful of lower-division prerequisite course requirements, as well as college requirements. Students transferring into Structural Engineering from outside UCSD have unique circumstances that do not always fit neatly into the course plan.

If you have not yet graduated from high school, you can enroll with written approval from your high school principal or counselor. The approval, which must be signed by a school official on school letterhead, must accompany your enrollment form when you enroll .
Concurrent Enrollment is open to anyone who has completed high school and has not been dismissed, disqualified or suspended from the University of California, or withdrawn from a UC while on academic or disciplinary probation.
IMPORTANT: You do not need to enroll in and pay for your concurrent enrollment course before accessing ACMS resources. You should access ACMS resources as soon as the course begins to ensure you don’t fall behind. If you are a former UC San Diego student, you will not be able to use your old AD or SSO account.
The Concurrent Enrollment program does not meet the qualifications for UC San Diego Extension to complete an in-school deferment. Students must be enrolled in a qualified UC San Diego Extension certificate program, in which they will obtain a certificate upon completion of the program.

An undergraduate student who enrolls at UC San Diego as a freshman in Fall 2019 and thereafter is allowed to enroll for twelve quarters to complete all requirements for a bachelor of arts (BA) or bachelor of science (BS) degree. If a student reaches this quarter limit and needs additional time to complete those requirements, they will be required to submit a completion plan and have it approved by their major department or program as well as their college prior to enrolling for additional quarters to continue work toward the degree.

The Department of Political Science will accept Political Science (POLI) courses taken in Winter 2021 and Spring 2021 to be allocated toward requirements in it's majors and minors if a student has earned a "Pass" grade.
Many Political Science students decide to double major during their time at UCSD. Please note that Political Science students may not double major within the same Department (i.e. you may not have both a Political Science - International Relations major and a Political Science - Public Policy major, for example).
The Department of Political Science requires that all students take their major required coursework for a letter grade. This includes all lower division and upper division work. The only exception to this rule is for courses that do not offer a letter grade option (such as POLI 199).
You will be notified when your application decision is finalized. Application requires several levels of approval and may be returned to the student for revisions as needed. Application may take up to 2 weeks to process. Most applications will be finalized between week 2 and week 4 of the quarter.
