IBM researchers designed and taught regular courses at Columbia, training graduate students to apply computing to various scientific disciplines , including astronomy, engineering and physics. In addition to becoming an academic discipline, computer science also began to take root as a vocation.
Watson Laboratory courses are listed in this 1951 Columbia University course catalog. In 1947, IBM began teaching the Watson Laboratory Three-Week Course on Computing, which is seen as the first hands-on computer course. It reached more than 1600 people. The course was dispersed to IBM education centers worldwide in 1957. By 1973, IBM had about 100 educational centers, and in 1984, was conducting 1.5 million student-days of teaching.
Because there were so few university courses in computing in the early days, IBM set up the Manhattan Systems Research Institute in 1960 to train its own employees. It was the first program of its kind in the computer industry.
In the mid-1930s, General Electric suggested that IBM run customer executive training classes to explain what IBM products could do for clients. In response, IBM created a tabulating knowledge-sharing program.
In 1933, Watson helped set up a lab at Columbia dedicated to using tabulating machines in astronomy. Later, IBM set up its own basic scientific research lab on the edge of the campus—so its scientists could easily interact with those of Columbia and other universities.

The first computer science departments in American colleges came along in the early 1960s, starting at Purdue University.
Bob Metcalfe started graduate school at Harvard in 1969 after earning undergraduate degrees in engineering and business at MIT. When Harvard got its ARPAnet node in 1971, Metcalfe wanted to manage it. Harvard rebuffed him: that was a job for a professional, not a grad student.
So when Ben Barker studied hardware design as a Harvard sophomore, his instructor was a part-time adjunct faculty member named Severo Ornstein. Ornstein was an engineer at the Cambridge firm of Bolt Beranek and Newman (which had been co-founded by Leo Beranek, Ph.D. ’40).
Cheatham set the tone for the Harvard style: bring in good people and give them a lot of responsibility and a lot of freedom —a method that one of our group reported using successfully later as a hiring strategy. Cheatham’s students had a profound influence on language design.
But the most obvious actual utility of the first IMPs was to enable a printer attached to one computer to print a document from another. While working for BBN during his Harvard graduate studies, Barker installed the first IMP at UCLA in September 1969.

Rob Shostak, having established a strong theoretical reputation during his years at SRI, launched the Paradox database system in 1985 —for a while a personal computer database system very widely used in offices, including Harvard’s.
The earliest research into thinking machines was inspired by a confluence of ideas that became prevalent in the late 1930s, 1940s, and early 1950s. Recent research in neurology had shown that the brain was an electrical network of neurons that fired in all-or-nothing pulses. Norbert Wiener 's cybernetics described control and stability in electrical networks. Claude Shannon 's information theory described digital signals (i.e., all-or-nothing signals). Alan Turing 's theory of computation showed that any form of computation could be described digitally. The close relationship between these ideas suggested that it might be possible to construct an electronic brain.
He noted that "thinking" is difficult to define and devised his famous Turing Test. If a machine could carry on a conversation (over a teleprinter) that was indistinguishable from a conversation with a human being, then it was reasonable to say that the machine was "thinking". This simplified version of the problem allowed Turing to argue convincingly that a "thinking machine" was at least plausible and the paper answered all the most common objections to the proposition. The Turing Test was the first serious proposal in the philosophy of artificial intelligence .
In Japan, Waseda University initiated the WABOT project in 1967, and in 1972 completed the WABOT-1, the world's first full-scale intelligent humanoid robot, or android. Its limb control system allowed it to walk with the lower limbs, and to grip and transport objects with hands, using tactile sensors. Its vision system allowed it to measure distances and directions to objects using external receptors, artificial eyes and ears. And its conversation system allowed it to communicate with a person in Japanese, with an artificial mouth.
The power of expert systems came from the expert knowledge they contained. They were part of a new direction in AI research that had been gaining ground throughout the 70s. "AI researchers were beginning to suspect—reluctantly, for it violated the scientific canon of parsimony—that intelligence might very well be based on the ability to use large amounts of diverse knowledge in different ways," writes Pamela McCorduck. " [T]he great lesson from the 1970s was that intelligent behavior depended very much on dealing with knowledge, sometimes quite detailed knowledge, of a domain where a given task lay". Knowledge based systems and knowledge engineering became a major focus of AI research in the 1980s.
Formal reasoning. Artificial intelligence is based on the assumption that the process of human thought can be mechanized. The study of mechanical—or "formal"—reasoning has a long history. Chinese, Indian and Greek philosophers all developed structured methods of formal deduction in the first millennium BCE.
It began to be used successfully throughout the technology industry, although somewhat behind the scenes. Some of the success was due to increasing computer power and some was achieved by focusing on specific isolated problems and pursuing them with the highest standards of scientific accountability. Still, the reputation of AI, in the business world at least, was less than pristine. Inside the field there was little agreement on the reasons for AI's failure to fulfill the dream of human level intelligence that had captured the imagination of the world in the 1960s. Together, all these factors helped to fragment AI into competing subfields focused on particular problems or approaches, sometimes even under new names that disguised the tarnished pedigree of "artificial intelligence". AI was both more cautious and more successful than it had ever been.

Douglas Engelbart publishes his seminal work, "Augmenting Human Intellect: a conceptual framework". In this paper, he proposes using computers to augment training. With his colleagues at the Stanford Research Institute, Engelbart started to develop a computer system to augment human abilities, including learning. The system was simply called the oNLine System (NLS), and it debuted in 1968.

Prestel, claimed by BT as "the world's first public viewdata service", was opened in London in September, running on a cluster of minicomputers. It had been conceived in the early 1970s by Samuel Fedida of the Post Office Research Laboratories at Dollis Hill, London. Similar developments were under way in France (Teletel) and Canada (Telidon). Only those active at the time will remember the sense of euphoria and opening of possibilities in what would now be called the e-business and e-learning worlds. (Sadly, the concept was premature, although in France it had most success.) A number of mainframe, minicomputer and even micro-computer based systems and services were later developed in educational circles of which perhaps the best known were OPTEL, Communitel, ECCTIS and NERIS.
