In Star Trek Online, the tutorials encompass the first few missions for each faction. With the help of several tooltip pop-ups, the player is slowly introduced to the game's UI and mechanics of ground and space combat.
Star Trek Online space combat is honestly pretty simple. Do the most damage possible to your enemy while taking as little as possible. Spread damage out on your own shields while concentrating it on specific sections of the enemy’s.
I’ve mentioned in the past that a lot of important information regarding the MMORPG Star Trek Online is centralised within the official subreddit. That’s fine if you enjoy using this platform but it’s not for everyone.
Our complete guide to character creation in Star Trek Online covers the traits and bonuses of all the races, both Klingon and Federation, as well as providing you with step by step instructions to creating the best possible STO character.
Probably the simplest and most important thing to remember when it comes to STO’s space battles is this: keep your weapons pointed at the enemy.
Now, keeping in mind that your enemies are probably going to be using all the tactics described in the offensive combat section against you, it’s important to think about how you will counter those tactics.
On Deck 2, Commander Davis asks you to help him by destroying some Borg devices. Target them by clicking or by using the “Tab” key, then use your number keys to attack. Most of the devices will explode with a single burst from your phaser.
The exit is located at the North end of the deck, down a short corridor to the right.
The exit is located at the North end of the deck, down a short corridor to the right. Take the turbolift down to Main Engineering. You will encounter several Borg as you make your way through the ship corridors. You can choose to fight them, or just run past.
Make your way down the hallway, past the crewmen fighting against the Borg. You can’t assist them due to the forcefields in the hallway, but you will get your chance in the next room.
Ships are requisitioned from Starfleet and come fully equipped to complete your missions. You can and will add to the kit including the following items:
Set energy output for maximum weapons ("X" icon to the right of the shield strength indicator). This sets your weapons for maximum damage and faster kills. If you are in a battle with multiple enemies and your shields are taking a beating, change the setting for shield generation ("D" icon).
The key to ground missions is having your character and away team officers properly outfitted with
STO ground, or away, missions are generally combat oriented although some are simple retrieval missions. If you are prompted for a single away team member to accompany you, this is a good indication that there will not be any combat on the mission. Otherwise, outfit your team accordingly and have at it.
Developer’s Cryptic rely on the sale of these for much of their revenue. They recently made many Tier 6 ships scalable, so they can be used by new players and will level with them. So it ultimately comes down to your personal choice and budget. However, a free player will not be penalised for not spending money.
Unlike other communities, STO does not seem to have that many fan produced blogs. However, I may be wrong regarding this, so feel free to correct me (and provide URLs). In the meantime, I thought it may be useful to write a series of simple guides, offering practical information for those who are new to STO.
A: STO is a free to play game. Unlike some other MMOs there are no major impediments to new players. Story based content is not locked behind any sort of paywall. Once a player has completed the tutorial and reached level 10 (which is easy to do) they can play the latest material. Some content is scalable.
