What is JRE 1.7.0_11?

In JRE 1.7.0_11, Oracle introduced changes to the JRE to increase the default Java security level, and to start prompting users when unsigned applets are invoked . Here is an example of a user attempting to launch an unsigned applet with JRE 1.7.0_11:

What are the two types of Java applets?

There are two types of Java applets: Signed and Unsigned. An unsigned Java applet runs in a security “sandbox” and has certain restrictions on what it can do while running on a given system. For instance, an unsigned applet can only communicate with the server from which it was launched and it cannot access the local file system (except for browser cache and cookies, for instance). For this reason, unsigned applets were considered “safer”, because they had fewer capabilities on the system on which they were running. Because they were considered safer due to the security sandbox restrictions, up until JRE 1.7.0_11, unsigned Java applets used to execute in the browser without notifying the user. As of JRE 1.7.0_51, unsigned applets are no longer supported by Oracle.
