A MINOR is an academic discipline outside of the major, in which a student develops a subsidiary specialization. Within some academic minors there are various designated course patterns which may be used to fulfill the minor. These alternate ways of fulfilling the minor are called TRACKS.
High School GPA. If your high school GPA was 2.7 or higher, you will have the option at orientation to choose ENL 110 or ENL 109; both courses satisfy the W-I requirement. You may prefer ENL 109 if you speak more than one language at home or school (this course is designed for multilingual or ESL writers).
Most first year students are required to take a W-I writing course as part of the general education curriculum. To determine which writing class you will register for at orientation, you may have to take a Writing Self-Placement test. Title.
Exemptions from W-I. Some students may be exempt from the W-I course altogether. Students who are exempt from the W-I writing course do not complete writing self-placement and may advance to their W-II writing course. Please carefully read Salem State's full exemption policy. Title.

This course features in-depth study of cultural topics in Latin America or Spanish studies, which may include the study of literature and/or cultures of the Latin American world and their diaspora, and/or Spain, Portugal and Africa. The course topics will emphasize the analysis of authentic cultural texts, such as film, music, art, news, magazine articles, websites or literature. Conducted in Spanish. Repeatable for credit one time.
Beginning skills are developed in the areas of listening, speaking, reading, writing, as students explore Arabic-speaking world cultures. Assumes no prior familiarity with the Arabic language and uses a student-centered approach. Basic grammatical structures & sound patterns of Arabic are introduced, with careful attention to mastery of writing the Arabic script, learning to read the characters, pronunciation and listening comprehension. This course is for students who already have a good foundation in Italian (through a communicative or contextual approach), but who need a thorough review of grammar as they move to the next level of proficiency. Particular attention will be paid to differences between Italian and English grammatical structures, and students will work on translation, writing and dictation.

These credits are undesignated. It is recommended that students use free electives to explore areas of study outside their major discipline. Students may want free electives to broaden their knowledge of subject areas that relate to their major programs, professional goals, or cultural interests. A student may consider using free electives to establish a minor or, together with other credits, to establish a second major. Individual programs may restrict the number of free electives that can be taken in the major discipline. Students should consult departmental guidelines and policies before taking free electives in their major discipline.
This core requirement (required for all first-year students and transfers with fewer than 15 credits) will introduce students to the experience of academic exploration that is at the hear of a liberal arts education . Through study of one or more compelling quetions or topics in a small seminar setting, students will practice creative and critical thinking as an introduction to academic inquiry. A survey course designed to deepen the student's knowledge of the vast literature of mathematics. Historically influential concepts will be examined for their effects on mathematics and the culture in which they evolved. Philosophical and psychological comparisons will be made between the mathematical and scientific developments in Ancient Greek times, in the Renaissance and Newtonian times, and in the 19th and 20th centuries.
Topics may include probability and descriptive statistics, voting theory, graph theory, cryptography, game theory, chaos, and problems relating to the environment.
An introduction to cryptography - the study of methods of sending messages in disguised form, including some recent applications of number theory and group theory to public key cryptography. Topics include elementary number theory, finite fields, group theory, cryptosystems, and public key cryptography.
Students must complete Foundation Courses in the general education curriculum within their first 30 credits taken at Salem State. Therefore, students who have earned more than 30 credits at Salem State will not have priority to register for the following courses:
Students must have completed a minimum of twelve (12) credit hours at Salem State University. Students must be enrolled for a minimum of six (6) credit hours and a maximum of eleven (11) credit hours in the given fall or spring semester. Students must have met all requirements to remain in good academic standing.
Candidates for a Bachelor’s Degree must attain a final cumulative grade-point average of at least 2.000 as well as a minimum grade point average of 2.000 in their major field of study, before the degree will be awarded. A cumulative grade-point average is calculated for each student at the end of each semester. It is based solely on credit earned and grade points received at Salem State University and at Northeast Consortium Colleges and Universities via the cross registration system.
Life experience credits (up to 30 credits) may be granted to students who demonstrate prior knowledge of or competency in specific subject areas. This prior learning must be equivalent to the knowledge and content related to specific courses offered at the University. In order to be eligible for life experience credits, students must first verify that they will satisfy the requirement to complete a minimum of 30 graded course credits at Salem State University by the time they graduate. A leave of absence is a period during which a student having been formally admitted to the university maintains matriculated status, but is entitled to none of the services of the University provided by the payment of tuition or fees. An application for a leave of absence may be filed at anytime during the academic year for the following semester. A leave of absence may begin during a semester, provided the completed application for leave is filed with the Registrar before the withdrawal deadline; in this case the entire semester is counted toward the leave.
At the end of each semester (including the summer semester), each student’s academic progress is reviewed to optimize that student’s chances for success. The university identifies students to be either in good standing or at academic risk depending upon each individual student’s grade point average (GPA) and satisfactory academic progress rate.
ISP Majors must receive approval before a student begins the Junior year. ISP Majors for students transferring in at the Junior level must receive approval before the end of the student’s first semester at the University.
Upon acceptance into the program, you will complete a tentative Plan of Study in consultation with the program coordinator. You must request that any transfer credits be considered at this time. PLEASE NOTE THAT NO MORE THAN THREE COURSES TAKEN AT SALEM STATE UNIVERSITY BEFORE ADMISSION CAN BE COUNTED TOWARDS THIS PROGRAM.
