When a student drops a class, it disappears from their schedule. After the “drop/add” period, a student may still have the option to Withdraw. Withdrawal usually means the course remains on the transcript with a “W” as a grade. It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average).

At CAS, students are able to withdraw from courses through the ninth week of a given fall or spring semester, and should consult directly with their general academic advisors to understand the necessary procedures. Students in other divisions of NYU may be subject to different deadlines, and should consult their advisors for more information.#N#Withdrawing from a course may be appropriate if extenuating circumstances prevent you from devoting the necessary time to a course, or impact your ability to do well in exams. Getting that request approved can be difficult, and you need extenuating circumstances that support your rationale for taking the course elsewhere.
