8 year Ankiversary today after 1.3 M reviews and 2915 days studied - Ask Me Anything!

Hey, for the last years I started to make this a tradition. On this day, 8 years ago, I started using Anki and have not stopped using it, missing my tasks only for recorded 9 days (of which 1-2 have not been recorded properly). I just recently checked out the first cards I learned because I didn't remember (oh the irony) which cards they had been.

This feels like cheating at life

I feel like I have this dirty little secret as to why I can remember birthdays addresses etc.

Anki vs Memrise

As many of you know – and many of you are as well – I’m a big fan of Anki .

Quick Summary of What Anki Does

It’s simple: you want to make a flashcard, so you tell Anki that and write whatever you want the front and back of the card to be (in this case as an example we have “to be” on the front and “ser” on the back):

A Demonstration of Memrise in Action (video)

Here’s a quick video I did for you guys of me learning German with Memrise, it’s unedited, a little under 5 minutes long, and covers a whole lesson:

Where are memrise levels stored?

Memrise levels are stored in a field and notes get a corresponding tag. Creating a subdeck per level is no longer supported because that's not the way Anki should be used ( Using Decks Appropriately ). Instead Filtered Decks and the level tags can be used to learn levels separately.

Can Progress be imported from Memrise?

Progress (intervals, due dates, etc.) from Memrise can be imported. But be cautious to not overwrite your local Anki progress in case you want to update an already downloaded deck. If the templates have been renamed manually, a dialog will help you to assign the existing template to a testing direction.

What is a field mapper?

The field mapper allows to freely configure the fields from Memrise to the fields of the selected note type. Multiple Memrise fields can be merged to one note field. This allows the reuse of existing note types without much hassle.

Can you import mems from Memrise?

The import of your mems from Memrise is possible. A mem is assigned to a testing direction (front to back), therefore a field needs to be created for each direction. This means that only the mems selected by the currently logged in user are imported. As Anki does not officially support embedded media (youtube, etc.) the option to embed online media is experimental, embedded media may or may not work depending on your platform. If the option is disabled (default), a link will be shown instead.

Do good wordlists come for free?

Good wordlists don't come for free, they are the result of a lot of work. Respect the rights of the authors and their hard work. And please support the guys at Memrise by subscribing to premium.
