The University of Wisconsin’s Intensive English Program helps students to improve their academic English. You can choose between a 15-week program in either the fall or spring or an 8-week program in the summer.
ELI students who are seeking admission to FIU may receive a TOEFL® exemption if they complete all ELI’s Intensive English Program level six courses with a passing grade. Certain graduate programs do not accept level 6 as proof of language proficiency.
Online Intensive English Program - classes are taught online during live sessions (up to 20 contact hours). Students have access to their teachers during the sessions. The ELI has taught approximately 25,000 students and professionals from more than 45 countries. Top 5 countries represented: Colombia, China, Venezuela, Brazil, Saudi Arabia.

120 creditsCredits Required to Graduate: Bachelor's degree - Most Bachelor degree programs require a minimum of 120 credits for a BA or BS degree.
We do offer online and evening classes. However, some courses may be held during regular business hours. If you need to take a class that is scheduled during the day, it is possible to petition the department to move it to an evening class. FIU is slowly converting all courses to have an online or hybrid version.

For more information, please refer to policies.fiu.edu. When do my credits expire? Master's level credits expire after six years and doctoral credits expire after nine years (if degree is not earned). If the degree is earned they never expire.
Students who have completed any of the following options are able to waive the Foreign Language Competency or FLENT/FLEX requirement: For high school and transfer students: Completion of 2 years of the same foreign language in high school prior to admission into FIU.
a 3.3 GPAFIU has minimum scores and GPA level for automatic admission. For fall entry, the minimums are a 3.3 GPA and an SAT of 1530 or an ACT of 22. (These minimums are much higher if you're graduating high school a year early -- at least a 4.0 GPA and an SAT of 1950 or an ACT of 29 required.)

Will My Diploma Say That I Earned My Degree Online? No. Your diploma will not indicate the modality you chose to earn a degree. Whether you complete a program traditionally through on-campus, hybrid, or online instruction your diploma would simply state the name of the program you have completed.

The Intensive English language course curriculum is designed to help you easily transition to university study. The course structure is designed to focus on four specific pillars that make up the necessary skills for academic success.
ELS offers 12 proficiency levels (Beginner to Masters), as well as placement testing to determine the level that best fits your abilities. At the end of every four-week session, if you successfully meet your level's requirements, you will move up to the next level. As you progress through the levels, your courses build upon the skills you learned in the lower levels and become more complex.
Key Language Skills: Our English courses cover all essential language skills such as: listening, speaking, reading, writing, pronunciation, and grammar. You will learn to speak with clarity, listen carefully, and gain the writing competencies necessary to complete your academic assignments with ease and accuracy.
Each lesson of the English course for adults focuses on specific topics, and which cover all key areas of communication: reading, writing, speaking and understanding. Each lesson prepares you for how language is used in ‘real’ life, with practical examples everyone can relate to.
The teaching methods in the English language courses for adults are integrated with books, articles, magazines, videos, songs … Internet resources also offer a much more comprehensive learning approach and all methods can be applied to everyday situations.
