The grade point average (GPA) is determined by dividing the total number of grade points earned in courses by the total number of credits attempted. GPA calculations only include grades earned at NOVA, unless specifically noted in an articulation agreement with another college.
If a student repeats a course for which they have transfer credits, only the transfer credits count toward the 120 credits required for graduation. The course repeated at U.Va. does appear on the student’s transcript but the grade earned does not enter into computation of the grade point average.

Basic Repeat Policies You can only repeat a course one time to replace a grade. Grades in third attempts of a course will not be calculated into your GPA, but will be shown on your transcript. If you earned a grade of D+, D, D-, or F, you must take your repeat for a letter grade.
Repeating a course does not change a student's GPA for a given semester. A graduate's curriculum and cumulative GPAs and Honors designations at the time of graduation will remain unchanged if the graduate repeats a course.
Repeat & Retake of Course(s) A student obtaining “F” grade in any course in any Trimester will have to “Repeat” the course with full payment of tuition fee for that particular course. Students desiring to improve their grade(s) may again take up course(s) which are termed as “Retake”.
Completed credit hours do not impact the GPA. If he retakes a 3 credit hour course where an F was received at VMI, he can project a GPA by multiplying the attempted credit hours by the desired GPA. Then he will subtract the current grade points and divide the answer by the number of courses being repeated.
The second grade always replaces the first grade. However, you can retake a class and get a worse grade. For example, if you have a D (a passing grade) and retake a course and receive an F (a failing grade), you now have a failing grade in the course and will have to take the class for a third time.
Limitations. The transcript displays the official record of classes students enroll in during school, so most grades cannot be changed or removed.
When Grade Forgiveness is applied to a student's record, the grade earned during the first attempt of the course is no longer factored in to the student's GPA but it will still appear on the student's transcript. In other words, the new grade replaces the old grade in the calculation of a student's GPA.
The GPA is carried out to two digits past the decimal point (example 1.00). No rounding shall be done to arrive at the GPA.
The grades of “A,” “B,” “C,” “D,” “P,” and “S” are passing grades.
The minimum full-time academic load is 12 credits, and the normal maximum full-time load is 18 credits or 19 if one is a one-credit Student Development (SDV) course.
Example 1. Tania takes MATH 1040 in the fall 2019 semester. She receives a C- grade and 3 credits for the course. She decides to retake the course in the winter 2020 semester in order to improve her grade and GPA. However, for her repeat class she receives an F grade and no credits.
For her repeat class she receives another F and no credits. In the fall 2020, she decides to retake the course for a third time. She receives a D grade and three credits for the course. Tania can repeat MATH 1040 and receive financial aid. Semester.
Under an academic plan, a student's progress will be monitored at the end of each semester in order to ensure that the student is progressing according to the requirements of the plan. As long as the student is progressing accordingly, the student will remain eligible for financial aid.

A student's appeal may be approved on a probationary basis for one semester, as long as it is feasible for the student to meet all SAP requirements within one semester. If not, an academic plan must also be included with the appeal. Late appeals will not be accepted.
To enroll in more than 18 credits, students must have a 3.00 grade point average or higher on the last 12 credits or most recent semester of full-time enrollment completed at NOVA or another accredited college or university, and the approval of the dean of students at their primary campus.
Learning Communities are part of an innovative program for enriching student success. NOVA offers selected pairs of courses that form learning communities by linking developmental studies, Honors courses, or courses related to a particular major. A common cohort of students enrolls in the linked classes and works together with faculty on shared assignments and learning opportunities. Learning Communities will focus on helping students become a better learner, while learning more about themselves and how they learn. This is an opportunity for students to get to know their professors and classmates better, to build a supportive academic network, and to improve their study skills to become a successful college student. Normally, students may enroll a maximum of two times in a credit course that is not a general usage course or a course designated as repeatable for credit. Exceptions to this policy will be considered on a case-by-case basis when a student submits a Course Repeat Request Form (125-013) to the academic division offering the course.
The “P/U” grading option may be used for an entire section of any course but not for an individual student within a course. Use of this grade must be approved by the academic dean. Grades of “P” are not included in grade point average calculations. Only seven credit hours of “P” grades may be applied toward graduation.

When students earn a grade of C or better and choose to repeat the course, it must be repeated for E credit. Courses with E prefixes do not lead to graduation credit and the grades are not computed in the cumulative grade-point average.
An “Academic Warning” is issued to any student who incurs a quality point deficit between 10 and 34.5 quality points. A student who fails to show progress toward graduation may receive more than one “Academic Warning” until such time as the quality point deficit is reduced in its entirety. However, a student who has not made satisfactory progress during any grading period may be suspended without further “Academic Warnings.”
Campbell University has an academic forgiveness policy for which eligible candidates may apply. To be eligible, a candidate’s course credits must be at least eight years old. Under the terms of the policy, credit will be awarded (hours only) for courses for which the candidate earned a grade of “C” or better. Students will not be required to repeat courses for which they have earned a “D”; however, no credit hours toward graduation will be allowed for “D” grades. Under the terms of the eight-year forgiveness policy, failing grades will not be charged against a student’s grade point average.
