There are two semesters during the regular academic Year, fall and spring. Plus you can take additional courses in the summer semester. Most colleges have two main semesters- fall and spring that run about 15/16 wks. These colleges may also offer much shorter summer (between 5–8 wks) and winter sessions (any 3 wks).
There are a few reasons you might want to apply to start in January: you missed the application deadline. your applications weren't successful or you missed the offer. the course you want to study only starts in January.
Semesterisation is a pattern of delivery where the academic year is split into three distinct 'semesters' which are 15 weeks in duration. A course on the semester system would typically be delivered over two semesters.

If you don’t meet the main application deadline, you can still apply for many courses. We recommend you ask the universities whether they have vacancies first – especially for courses with a 15 October deadline, as it’s unusual for them to consider late applications because their courses are really competitive.

7 months before applying: Identify the tasks you’ll need to complete for each application. 6 months before applying: Create a detailed planning and tracking system for all the tasks you need to complete for your graduate school applications.
A general rule with rolling admissions is that it’s better to apply earlier if you can because admissions will be less competitive. Essentially, the earlier you apply, the more space remains in the class.
Once you’ve got a list of tasks that you’ll need to do complete and a general idea of when those things need to be completed, make a clear, organized planning and tracking system for your tasks.
Ask for recommendation letters: It’s best practice to ask for recommendation letters at least eight weeks in advance of any deadlines.
