Upon further reflection I think it also depends on your company- where it is at in phase, growth, and assets or existing products. I probably would not use PM at a startup. BUT- when I was working with product decisions that could affect <$10M in assets then it was a good framework because it provides a lot of activities that were “due diligence” type activities.
We have used some PM frameworks and I have found them to be really useful because it takes all the feelings out of the the product equations, allowing one to evaluate products more diagnostically and with less attachment. I think this can be useful on many levels.
