Withdrawal from a course can be accomplished only by the submission of a course change notice through the office of the residential college dean. A fee of $20 will be charged for the processing of an approved course change notice on which withdrawal from a course is requested.
You may drop courses until the deadline posted on the Dates page, after which you will receive a W on your transcript. Please read the form carefully and submit it with all the required information. Course change requests will be reviewed as they are received and are generally processed within 5 business days.

When a student drops a class, it disappears from their schedule. After the “drop/add” period, a student may still have the option to Withdraw. Withdrawal usually means the course remains on the transcript with a “W” as a grade. It does not affect the student's GPA (grade point average).
As a general rule of thumb, having one “W” should not be too big of a deal. However, if you continue to get them, medical schools will see this as a red flag in your potential to do well at medical school. Myth 2: You should always take a bad grade over a “W.”

Students should communicate their intentions to take a leave of absence to the residential college dean as soon as possible, ideally by the end of the semester preceding the leave of absence. The final deadline for submitting a petition is the fifteenth day of the semester in which the leave of absence is to begin.
