If a program is not acceptable for transfer credit, you may consider pursuing independent study credit or UCSC credit by petition. Major departments determine whether courses deemed transferable from another institution will satisfy major or minor requirements. To identify if courses at California Community Colleges are transferable to UCSC and if they satisfy general education or major requirements, use the statewide ASSISTwebsite.

UC Santa Cruz uses faculty-approved criteria to determine which transfer students will be selected for admission. Junior-level transfer students selected for admission are expected to graduate within two years of their initial enrollment.
The IGETC is intended exclusively for California community college transfers and is not an option for continuing UCSC students (including students who transferred to UCSC without having completed IGETC before their first quarter) or for students transferring from four-year colleges or universities.
105 credits📄 ‣ Courses taken at your local community college DO NOT count towards or impact your GPA at UC Santa Cruz. 📄 ‣ You can only transfer a MAXIMUM of 105 credits. While you will not receive credit above 105, you may still satisfy general education and lower-division major requirements.

UC Santa Cruz accepts 67.61% transfer applicants, which is competitive. To have a shot at transferring into UC Santa Cruz, you should have a current GPA of at least 3.6 - ideally you're GPA will be around 3.74. In addition, you will need to submit standardized test scores.

Upon return, grades can take up to four months to transfer back. You will see the courses listed on your UC Santa Cruz transcript and your corresponding UC grades at that time. You can submit a review of transfer credit online to request your pre-approved GE be applied to your Exchange course.
If your academic plan relies on satisfying specific GEs while abroad/away, it is strongly recommended you request pre-approval rather than assume your a UCSC Exchange courses will count toward your GEs. The DC requirement must be taken at UCSC.

The purpose of a course substitution is to allow students to use “related” regularly scheduled UCSC courses from another discipline towards their degree requirements.
