Seminars—small classes typically driven by discussion and other forms of active learning and in which students often take on teaching roles and responsibilities—offer tremendous opportunities for students and educators to make learning experiential, meaningful, and lasting.

The purpose of the Graduate Seminar is to provide: an opportunity for Graduate Students to develop skills in presentation and discussion of research topics in a public forum. Seminars will be conducted on a continuing basis appropriate to the complement of students within the department.

Graduate students grading other graduate students is discouraged since students ordinarily should not have access to information about the grades of their peers. If a graduate student is assigned as a TA for a graduate course, he or she is restricted to non-subjective grading, lab setup, website maintenance and general advising.
The Course in College Teaching is a ten-session seminar intended to prepare postdoctoral fellows and graduate students nearing the job market to teach college courses and to help them develop as instructors. The course will provide a structured series of workshops and discussions to help PhD students or postdoctoral fellows with little or no teaching experience. (Note: except in fields like design where a masters is a terminal degree, the Course in College Teaching is not appropriate for masters students.) Each session will use practical, hands-on activities to help students reflect on their own teaching goals and style. Students who complete the course will consider concrete ways of organizing, preparing for and teaching a course. Students will also create a portfolio of teaching materials – from sample assignments to in-class activities to syllabi – that they can use on the job market and to prepare them for their future as teachers.

In most cases, professors in seminars are looking less for “right” answers, and more for genuine engagement. Professors’ participation grades may be among the most highly weighted grades you’ll receive in a college seminar. So, focus on completing your assignments on time and being prepared for class so you can contribute to conversations in a meaningful way.
A conversation is all about give and take. This holds especially true in seminar courses, where you’ll be having lots of conversations with the people around you for the entire semester. It’s easy to talk a lot during a college seminar, and less easy to listen to others. Try to balance your speaking with listening.
The syllabus should include a comprehensive course schedule, the course objectives, information regarding the types of assessments that will be required ( exams, quizzes, papers, etc.), your contact information and any required institutional statements that your college may require in all of its syllabi.
