If you are an instructor for a course, you can publish your course in the Course Home Page sidebar or from the Course Setup Checklist.

What is access in a course?

Access relates to published courses. If a course is unpublished or does not include a link [1], students cannot have access to any course content until the start date of the term. If a course is published [2], students are able to view content before the start of the term.

Term dates define a fixed period of time for an institution where users can participate in a course. Term dates can also be used for semesters, trimesters, or quarters. In this example, the term runs from July 2, 2018, to December 23, 2018.

Can sections be moved?

Sections can be moved from term to term or course to course. If section enrollments need to be moved, such as for cross-listing a section into another course, section enrollments should be moved before students submit any coursework, as course participation cannot be transferred across sections.

Publishing your Canvas Content and Setting Course Availability

You’ve migrated your course completely, checked all your assignment settings, created your custom grading scheme, and are ready to begin your first semester as a Canvas instructor! When you reach this point, don’t forget the most important final step: publishing your course to make sure that students can access it.

The Difference between Published and Unpublished

Once all of your content is created and organized in the Modules Tab, you need to be sure that it is all correctly published in order to start your courses off successfully! Any material that is unpublished in your canvas course will not be visible to your students.

Which Content Should be Published?

Within Canvas, publishing needs to happen on several levels: individual content, complete modules, and the whole course. Make sure all of the following items are set to be published for your students so that everything that you want them to see will be visible on the first day of classes:

Setting your Course Availability

In addition to publishing your course, you can also adjust the set start and end dates of your course if you would like your students to be able to access it before or after the official session dates. Default course start and end dates reflect what is set in the course catalog within myFSCJ.

Select Sections

By default, Canvas will send your announcement to all sections within your course. To select specific sections for your announcement, click the Post to drop-down menu and select sections from the list provided.

Add Attachment

To add an attachment to your discussion, click the Choose File button [1].

Select Options

In the Options section, you can select various options for your announcement. You can delay the posting of your announcement [1], which allows you to schedule the announcement for a future date.
