Thanks for the reply. I did have a look to see how the templates are built and it was after seeing things like $heading etc. that I got it into my head that it would be really simple to display the root categories. Silly me.

You might like to look at Transient a Moodle 1.9 theme, which I made, that adds all the categories and courses into a menu. The php from that will give you an idea how it works. Also...depending on which Moodle version you are using, but the Moodle 2 versions offer a better solution as you can adapt the outputrenderer.php code to add to your theme.

In the course_categories table there is a column named path. This field shows the way from the current category to up to its root category including all the parent's ids. For example if the category id is 123 and you can see the following in the path field: /14/72/123 then it means that the parent's category id is 72, the root category id is 14.
