Create your Sandbox Course
A sandbox course is a private space where you can test items without impacting your live course(s). In your Sandbox Course, you will have the instructor role that allows you to utilize and practice with all tools available in a regular Canvas course.

Where can you find your sandbox course? This course can be found by clicking on the pull down arrow next to Courses at the top of the page. The course should be titled by your last name and then Sandbox. For example, if your name is James Jones, your sandbox course will be called Jones Sandbox.

In order to use the Sandbox Course creation tool, you must be enrolled in an existing course as a Teacher AND you must be accessing the Canvas dashboard using your institution specific link (see below).
There is a self service form available inside of Canvas that can be accessed by any Teacher.
Make sure you are accessing Canvas using your institutions website address. Sometimes, you will see uws.instructure.com which will still work for your courses, but the sandbox course creation tool will not work correctly in those circumstances. Check to make sure you are using the correct Canvas website address for your institutions:

Go to your dashboard, and select the Start a New Course button on the bottom right-hand side. (Or all the way at the bottom of the page depending on the width of your screen.)
If you are ready to copy your Sandbox material into a LIVE shell, here is a video tutorial on how to copy a full course into an empty shell:
Your LIVE shells will not have an “SB” identifier in front of the title of the shell.
Faculty can create their own development courses in Canvas. These are sometimes referred to as “sandbox” courses, since they are a place to explore, experiment and build new things.
Development courses should never have students enrolled in them. They are for development only.
