Canvas has the capability to create an “open” course. An “open” course is available for anyone online to view (just like a website).

A message will appear at the top of your screen confirming the publishing of your course.
If you need to unpublish your course, click the Unpublish button in the sidebar. Students who already received course invitations will not be able to access your course.
Course visibility options can be customized and allow access to different user roles. The visibility setting offers three choices for a course:
If you also want to customize content visibility, such as the course syllabus, click the Customize checkbox.
Your official canvas course settings have been set to allow for your course to be visible only to students who are enrolled in your course, but your Syllabus page within your Canvas site to be visible to anyone at our institution, meaning anyone who can login to Canvas.
If you would like to modify your course settings for your canvas site, you may do so, but it is advised you review the following article to understand what will and will not become available to others based on the changes you make.
For both you and your students, the course navigation menu is your means of finding your way around your Canvas course site. However, the menu may not look the same for you and your students. When you view the course navigation menu of a site in which you are an instructor, you will note that some links are black, while others are light gray.
1. To begin adjusting your course navigation menu, click on Settings in the course navigation menu, and choose the Navigation tab at the top.
Once you have customized your course navigation menu to your liking, you can use Canvas’ Student View tool to look at your course site through the eyes of a student. This is an excellent way to make sure that your students will have access to the correct items in the course navigation menu.
