Open the assignment

Click on an Assessment in your course to begin editing it. Assessments in Sapling Learning are indicated by an Assessments icon ( ). In Achieve, you can tell which assignments are Assessments by hovering your cursor over the assignment icon. The tooltip will display Assessment as shown below.

Save the new policy

In order to save your new policy, you will need to give it a title. Something descriptive like "Homework Late Penalty" works well.

Save grading settings

Once you have saved your new policy, you will return to the Grading Settings page. Your new policy will automatically be selected in the Custom Templates area. However, you still need to save the grading settings for the new policy to take effect.#N#Click Save in the upper right corner to apply the policy to the current assignment.

Student view

Students will only be notified of the late penalty once the assignment is past due. The next time they open the assignment, they will receive a warning message telling them about the penalty and how many days late their assignment is.

How other policy settings work with late penalty enabled

If late submissions are allowed and the main due date has passed, you cannot change the due date or the deduction.

In Sapling Learning gradebook

From the Grades page of Sapling Learning, you can start viewing a student's attempts right away by hovering over the student's grade, clicking the drop-down arrow, and clicking View Student Assignment .

In Achieve and Sapling Learning, open Assessment and view "Responses" tab

Another method of viewing student attempts that works in both Achieve and Sapling Learning is clicking on a student's name in the Performance Overview section of the Responses tab in the Assessment.

Viewing student's Assessment as an instructor

You are now seeing the instructor view of a particular student’s assignment, which does not have the same functionality as the student view.

Preparing your Sapling Learning course for Canvas integration

Before integrating your Sapling Learning course with Canvas, please first prepare your course.

Enabling the "Macmillan Learning" or "Bedford, Freeman & Worth" app in Canvas

Linking a Sapling Learning course with Canvas

These steps connect your Sapling Learning course to your Canvas course and must be completed before you will be able to add Sapling Learning assignments to Canvas.

Adding Sapling Learning gradebook items to Canvas

Adding assignments from your Sapling Learning course creates direct links to those assignments in your Canvas course and allows grades for those assignments to report to the Canvas gradebook.

Accessing ungraded Sapling Learning content in Canvas

It is currently not possible to add a direct link to an ungraded Sapling Learning item to Canvas without also creating a gradebook column. To avoid creating an excessive number of gradebook columns and slowing down grade sync, we recommend accessing ungraded content through a link to the Sapling Learning course homepage.

Select a Sapling Learning content item to add

Any item you select will only link to the Sapling Learning course homepage. However, the link will retain the name of the item, so students know what to access in the Sapling Learning course. You can also edit the name of these links in Canvas by following the instructions in this article.

Important notes about grade sync

Students must connect their Canvas and Sapling Learning accounts for their grades to sync with the Canvas gradebook. See the registration instructions below to present this information to students.
