Instructional design strategies for online learning have typically considered three main types of interaction: learner-content interaction, learner-instructor interaction and learner-learner interaction (Moore, 1989).
For online course participants, in-teraction with the course content (learner-content interaction) is especially important be-cause it can contribute to successful learning outcomes and course completion. This study aims to examine the relationship between learner-content interaction and course grade to determine if this interaction type is a contributing success factor. Data related to student interaction with course content, including time spent reviewing online course materials, such as module PowerPoint presentations and course videos and time spent completing weekly quizzes, were collected for students in three sections of an online course (N = 139). The data were then correlated against grades achieved in the course to determine if there was any relationship. Findings indicate statistically significant relationships between the amount of time the learner spent with the content and weekly quiz grades (r = .-72). The study concludes that learners who spent more time interacting with course content achieve higher grades than those who spent less time with the content.
Moore (1989) closed this gap by identifying a three-dimensional framework that characterized interaction as either learner-content, learner-instructor, or learner-learner. Learner-instructor interaction is communication between students and the instructor in a course, while learner-learner interaction is communication between the learner and peers in the same course . For online courses, this interaction can take place using both synchro-nous (video-conferencing, online chat sessions) and asynchronous (e-mail, discussion boards) methods (Kearsley, 1995). The learning method called Learning by Developing is defined as investigative learning applied to development projects (Rauhala, 2006). Hakkarainen et al. (2004, 17) claim that learning is at best an investigative process. This means not only analytical information processing and assessment, but also practical experimenting and learning from experience. Wenger (1998, 73) proposes that learning and expertise are transmitted through unofficial communities of practise. These communities have common goals, exist at work or other environments, but their members are not necessarily aware of this communal structure.
The advantages associated with teamwork were the support given by teammates, the benefit of having different views into the same topic and the possibility to share the work load with others. There was mainly one negative aspect brought forward: the different goals of team members and different degrees of commitment to the project and to teamwork. Students found it difficult to find ways to control teamwork and influence the team’s results if other team members had different views. They also complained about the difficulty to agree on timetables.

Interaction is a critical factor that impacts student learning and motivation to learn in online courses [1-3]. The US Distance Learning Association refers specifically to “learning activities within a K-12, higher education, or professional continuing education environment where interaction is an integral component” (Holden & Westfall, cited in [4]). But what components influence interaction in online learning? The question of interactions has a long history, demonstrating not only the importance of the topic but also the elusiveness of precise answers. For example, a panel was convened in 1989 by the Divisions of Independent Study and Educational Telecommunications of the National University Continuing Education Association at its annual meeting. The panel was titled "Interaction: That perplexing component of distance education" and debated such questions as: What level of interaction is essential for effective learning? What is good interaction? How can we achieve it? [5]. Today we ask these same questions as online learning continues to advance and proliferate.
A number of factors were found to influence interaction in online courses, such as group work, course environment, model use, community, discussion question type and assessment, feedback type and medium, immediacy behaviors, discourse guidelines, and instructor participation. Unfortunately, from the data collected for this study, it cannot be determined which of the above factors are most important for interaction or how context of courses plays a role in fostering interaction. Providing novice online instructors with a long list of factors could be overwhelming, especially without any means for prioritizing those factors.

This involves students conducting a private conversation with her each week in which they discussed what was happening with them in the course. This allows for personal reflection as well as providing some emotional presence in the online course.
