The best way to obtain a special permission number is to contact the professor of the class or the department in which the class is housed. Once you have a permission number, you can use it this way: Go to Enroll and Pay just as you would if enrolling in a normal class.

The Special Permission Number submission period for Spring 2022 will open on Sunday, November 28th at 10:00 a.m., and the SPN portal will close on Wednesday, December 8th, at 12:00 p.m.. We will respond with acceptances/rejections by Friday the 10th, once the system closes (not before).
We are using a new system that should streamline the SPN application process: it is an SPN request portal. Log in with your Net ID and password, and be sure to follow all instructions.
A student needs a special permission number when a course appears to be closed. Courses can be closed for several reasons:
How are Special Permission Numbers assigned? SPNs are assigned based on seniority, amount of cumulative credits, and availability.
What is an SPN? An SPN ( S pecial P ermission N umber) is a 6 digit code that allow students to register for a closed or restricted section. When entered into the online registration system, the SPN helps you gain access to closed courses. Please know that applying for an SPN does not mean that you are guaranteed to receive one.
What determines the assignment of SPNs? SPNs will only be issued for specific and/or extraordinary situations.
A student needs a pre-requisite override when the course is open but a student does not have or does not seem to have all pre-requisites. If the student does not have the pre-requisites, then it is up to the instructor of the course to approve admission. If the student does not seem to have all the pre-requisites, but does in fact have them, we will check the student’s transcript and act accordingly. This situation usually arises when students transfer into Rutgers, and our registration system does not recognize the equivalence of a transferred course to one of our own.
By arrangement: Independent Study and Honors Research, for example, require an approved application before registration can occur.
To register for an honors course or an honors section of a regular course in the forthcoming semester, you need to apply for special permission by completing the appropriate Special Permission Form available online. You should also use this form if you are already registered in an honors section for the forthcoming semester and would like to switch to another section of the same course.
DO NOT use the Automated Web System to submit your request!
Matriculated undergraduates must request special permission for admission to closed sections using the automated special permission system described below . Applications submitted through the non-matriculated student portal by matriculated students will not be processed. While the special permission process is ongoing, students should send an e-mail (with your NetId) to the instructor requesting temporary guest status in the course that they are trying to enter via special permission. The temporary status will allow students to attend so that no class time will be missed.
Students who have failed any of these courses twice because of extenuating circumstances can request an exception by submitting an appeal.
Admission to some honors courses is by permission of the department.
Starting in Fall semester 2019, students who have failed Precalculus (111, 112, or 115), Calculus I (either 135 or 151) or Calculus II (either 136 or 152) twice can no longer take the course again at Rutgers New Brunswick.
Permission. If a class requires consent, permission may be given out by the professor or department. Permission is usually provided in two ways: student-specific permission or permission numbers.
Enrollment by Permission. You may see “Enrollment by Permission” listed as a type of reserved seat. If you are unable to add the class, you should waitlist the class and contact the instructor or department to learn more about how to get permission to enroll.
Sometimes the department will add a student’s name to a virtual permission list, which allows the student to enroll. If the department or an advisor confirms that you have been given student-specific permission, you should be able to enroll as usual. However, if you are on the waitlist, you must first drop the waitlist, ...
A permission number (also known as an “add code”) is a 5 or 6-digit number given to students, by the instructor or department of the course, which enables the student to enroll in a course.
Permission numbers are given at the discretion of the instructor or department.
A permission number is only valid for one specific section of the course. If you want to change sections, you will need a new permission number. Permission numbers alone can not override time conflicts.
