At the end of the second semester of a student's attendance, at the completion of the twelfth credit hour, or when master's degree requirements are completed, whichever is later, the student, with the advice and consent of the student's academic advisor, graduate coordinator, and members of the student's advisory and examining committee, will submit a plan of study, initiated in the student's department, to the dean or dean's designee. Some departments may require that a preliminary dissertation research proposal be submitted along with the plan of study.
A Plan of Study must be prepared by the student and the AEC chair. This plan must be approved by the student, all members of the AEC, the graduate program coordinator, the department chair, and the dean before the end of the second semester of the student's attendance or before the completion of the twelfth course credit hour applicable to the Master's degree requirements, whichever is later. Independent study courses, XXX 695 for M.S. students, or XXX 795 for Ph.D. students, are used when a student requires knowledge in a particular area for successful completion of his/her research program and a course of this type is not offered or expected to be offered in the immediate future in the University; further the students feels that he/she could not learn this course on his/her own but needs a structure and regular guidance from a faculty member that has expertise in this area. Independent Study courses are NOT intended for earning credit for research problems. It is the responsibility of the student to see that this statement of course exceptions is prepared in writing.
