To have students see the syllabus – rather than you – as their starting point for information about the course, make the document a central part of your first class and require them to engage with it directly. (For in-person classes, you may wish to bring a few printed copies for the students who missed or ignored your class email.)
Continuously remind students as the term goes on that the syllabus exists for them as a resource. For example, when discussing class assignments, directly reference the syllabus. Explicitly tie your class content to the learning outcomes over the course, “as described in the syllabus.” And, if it fits your personal style, you can even get an “it’s in the syllabus” t-shirt for your wardrobe.
Syllabus quiz. Hand out a quiz with 10 true or false or fill-in-the-blank questions that can be answered with information in the class syllabus. Have groups of students work together to complete the quiz. Review the answers with the full class, inviting any questions for clarification.
This is especially important as you integrate skill building into your course; you want students to know exactly what you are doing. You can and should be discussing what learning outcomes you’re addressing regularly during the course. But the syllabus is the first, best and most enduring way to let them to know your own skills agenda for the course.

In general it depends on the particular University System. For example some systems (like mine) require course instructors to post their syllabi online when they teach the course and maintain it for a few years. I know of others that only require a generic syllabi or even worse just a course description.
You’re in really good shape! Since the template hasn’t been updated, you can copy your entire course over to your new section. Once it’s in the new section, you just need to edit a couple of the details – the course code at the top of the syllabus and the meeting information.
You’ll need to make sure you keep the autosyllabus in your new section. When you’re ready to copy your course content over, copy all the content except for the syllabus page. Canvas supports the ability to copy / import course content from one course to another. This functionality allows instructors to roll over course materials from semester to semester, course to course, without having to recreate a course from scratch. This copy process creates a clean version of course items like discussions, assignments, and quizzes in the receiving course site.
While the Import Course Content process brings over much of the Canvas developed content from a previous version of your course, there are a number of external applications that you may need to update separately to work correctly in the new copy of your course. After you have imported a copy of your course content, please be sure to review the " Refining and Updating Your Course" section below to ensure all components of your course will function correctly once you have copied your course materials.
