So, here goes, this is our beginners guide to the darkroom and how you use it. The main use of a darkroom is to print your photographs in the traditional way. Its called a darkroom because it is almost completely dark – apart from a red light called a “safe light”.
Previous darkroom experience is not necessary, and a basic understanding of exposure, although useful, is not essential. You are also welcome to bring along any exposed B&W films (or negatives) of your own, whether 35mm, 120 or 5x4 format.

This course is a comprehensive introduction to traditional analogue black and white photography, designed to equip participants to work in a darkroom to produce high quality negatives and prints.
Because of the popularity of digital photography today, darkrooms are not as popular or necessary as they once were. You can still find them, though, in professional photo studios, colleges, and photography schools. In the 1970s, Polaroid created integral or “instant" film for use in special cameras.
Highly recommend Darkroom. I enjoy the dropbox integration for easily getting the images online to share. The interface is simple and easy to use, but powerful. The price could be better, but for how simple and easy it is yet many many functions it has, I think it's worth it.
It's vital to measure the temperature of your mixture to determine how long your film will need to develop. All film is different, and you can find developing times online or in the manufacturer's instructions. Typically, film needs 8–11 minutes to develop properly.
Darkroom printing paper has a sensitivity to blue light, so darkrooms are set up to avoid that particular color in the visible light spectrum. Using a safelight with a red, or amber, filter helps to prevent any blue light from coming through and affecting the development of the photographic paper.
Photographic paper reacts to light to produce the image taken by a camera and stored on film. Darkrooms used red lighting to allow photographers to control light carefully so that light-sensitive photographic paper would not become overexposed and ruin the pictures during the developing process.
Walmart, Walgreens, and CVS all provide film development services. Walmart has the cheapest options but longest turnaround time and limited options, Walgreens can have the fastest turnaround time but is more expensive, and CVS delivers the best quality with a short turnaround time.
A common misconception is that you need a darkroom to develop your own film. It isn't necessary to use a darkroom to develop film. You can do this at home easily as we explain in our guides How To Develop Black And White Film and How To Develop Colour Film.
In comparing Darktable vs Lightroom, the interface is similar. Both have a file management system, and both include image processing tools. Darktable comes out ahead in the number of tools available. But, with more functionality comes more complexity.
They're fast, efficient, and great to work with. Darkroom made it so easy to share and sell my work to my audience, I literally had my shop launched in minutes. Darkroom gives me the ability to focus on creating great content without worrying about print quality, fulfillment or customer service.
Darktable provides a comprehensive range of powerful image editing tools and excels in the use of masking. Overall, Darktable is a brilliant image editing solution that provides many like-for-like features when compared to Lightroom – as well as a few better ones.

When you enter a darkroom you will encounter several key bits of equipment. All of which are necessary for it to work properly. Here we will explain what these things are and what they do.
Its called a darkroom because it is almost completely dark – apart from a red light called a “safe light”. This is really important because it allows you to handle ...
The reason you can have this red light on without ruining your paper is that nearly all darkroom papers are orthochromatic – which means they are partially blind to red light. Therefore they can be handled under dim red light without exposing them and ruining the paper.
Most darkrooms will have at least 3 trays set up. They are used to hold the developer, stop and fix when printing. There will also be a wash bath. You will be moving your paper from one tray to another through the developing process.
Focus Finder. A Focus Finder is used to help you focus on the enlarger. It is important because if you don’t focus properly you will get blurry prints – just like when you are taking photos. When you look through it, it magnifies your image so you can see the actual grain of the negative you are printing.
Some darkrooms might provide this for you, others will want you to bring your own. Either way, it is good to have an understanding of what you are using as it will affect your final prints. A specific paper developer, which is different from a film developer, needs to be used to develop the image on your paper.
A common misconception is that you need a darkroom to develop your own film. It isn’t necessary to use a darkroom to develop film. You can do this at home easily as we explain in our guides How To Develop Black And White Film and How To Develop Colour Film.
Is it just my bad luck? Basically I have taken a huge financial "hit" for COVID. Paying more for everything (rent fuel food health care trainfare local taxes)- have the shittiest CAO in the Netherlands - paying dues to a union that is completely out of touch. No compensation for travel costs. The list goes on and on.
I am looking forward to move to the Netherlands this year. I am from a mountainous region where on weekends, I can do a lot of outdoor activities such as walking, climbing, swimming, hiking,...in summer, and skiing, skating, and so on in winter.
