Withdrawing also affects a semester of financial aid eligibility. If you have a student loan (Federal Direct, Health Professions, or Perkins), the process remains the same as any withdrawal, and you are required to complete an exit interview.
If you are withdrawing for medical reasons, the process remains the same as any withdrawal and will be recorded as a "Self-Requested Medical Withdrawal". However, University Health Services at the Tang Center has an additional process for reviewing medical withdrawals which, if approved, will be recorded as "Approved Medical-Withdrawal".
Swapping Classes. The swap function can be used to drop one class and simultaneously add another. By swapping, rather than dropping then adding, you ensure you keep your original enrollment until your enrollment in the new class is confirmed.
Students are not automatically dropped from a class for failure to attend (there is no “instructor drop” in the summer term). If you are dropping all classes in all sessions (you no longer want to attend Summer Sessions), see the sections on “ Cancellation ” or “ Withdrawal ” for more details.
Dropping Classes. You are responsible for dropping any or all enrolled and/or waitlisted classes you do not wish to attend before the refund deadline to receive refund or to prevent being charged for the dropped class.
Students manage their schedules by adding and dropping classes. In general, it is your responsibility to manage your enrollment through CalCentral.

You are able to add and drop classes using CalCentral until Wednesday of the fourth week of instruction. Courses on the Early Drop Deadline list must be dropped by Friday of the second week of classes. Technical courses that can fulfill a requirement for your major must be taken for a letter grade. However, if you are taking a technical course that cannot fulfill any requirements for your major, you may change the grading option for that course until the end of the fifth week of instruction. After the fifth week of instruction, you may only change grading options in your H/SS courses.
Courses may be dropped by the Wednesday of the fourth week provided that you will still be in compliance with the Normal Progress policy.
You should use the Assist website to determine equivalencies for courses taken at California community colleges. Courses taken at four-year institutions (including other UC schools) and at community colleges outside California must be evaluated before subject credit can be awarded. To have a course evaluated, please consult with your Engineering Student Services (ESS) Adviser in 230 Bechtel Engineering Center. In most cases, you will need to provide a syllabus of the course in order to begin the course evaluation process.
No more than 16 units of 98, 99, 197, 198 and 199 courses can be counted toward the B.S. degree, and no more than 4 units in any single term can be counted.
Technical courses are defined as courses in engineering, computer science, data science, math, statistics, chemistry, the physical sciences, or the biological sciences. (Please check the footnotes for your major program for a list of courses in these departments that are not considered technical.)
Physical education. A maximum of 4 units of physical education courses are allowed to count toward the B.S. degree in engineering. Self-paced and independent classes. Self-paced classes are offered as alternatives to regular classes in some lower-division computer science courses.
Generally, adds, drops and changes of grading options are not permitted past the deadlines stated above in Adding or Dropping Courses. However, if you are experiencing academic or personal difficulties or other unexpected circumstances, you are encouraged to meet with your ESS Adviser to discuss options.
You can submit a late drop or a late grading option change by going to your CalCentral's "My Dashboard" tab and selecting "L&S Late Schedule Change" in the Student Resources section . You can also find this link in your CalCentral's Enrollment tile in your "My Academics" tab.
Please read the criteria below for each format and select the appropriate submission format for your situation. Allow three weeks for processing and check your CalCentral for enrollment updates.
To submit a DSP-related late drop or grading option change, use the Late Change of Class Schedule Online Form (link is external). Be prepared to attach a verification email from your DSP Specialist. The email should include your name, SID, action requested, and the course department and number.
Students often use the term "emergency drop" to describe using the Late Change of Class Schedule in order to drop a course. However, this term doesn't represent the policy well as no emergency is required in order to use a Late Change of Class Schedule and the Late Change of Class Schedule covers multiple late actions, not just drops.
Effective Fall 2021, College of Letters and Science students will be allowed a total of two late changes to their schedule.* Late changes include:
If you are on academic probation, you are still eligible to submit a Late Change of Class Schedule petition. However, you may not request to change a letter-graded course to Pass/No Pass during an academic probation semester.
If you are registered for the Disabled Students Program (DSP) and your DSP Specialist supports the specific late change you are requesting (due to an impact from your disability that occured after the regular add/drop deadline), you may be eligible for a late change of class schedule that is separate from the above policy.
