Course drops before or during the first week of the course receive a 100% refund of tuition, including any technology fees charged per course.
If you drop or withdraw from a course after the tuition has been paid, any refund of tuition is issued to your student account.
Please allow 30 days for the processing of tuition refunds. Depending on the original payment method, refunds may not be issued if there is a past due balance on the account. In some cases, credits may instead be applied to the open balance.
Any credit balance refund generated by courses paid for with Federal Student Aid will be processed within 14 days of the credit occurring.
Federal regulations state that if you do not begin attendance in or complete all courses you were scheduled to attend, you may be subject to a Return of Title IV (R2T4) calculation which will determine how much financial aid you have earned and are eligible to receive.
Note: regardless of the refund amount, you may receive a W grade on your transcript if you withdraw from a course after week one. Read our course drops and withdrawal policies for complete details.
Involuntary Withdrawals. You will receive the standard tuition refund based on the date of the withdrawal if you are involuntarily withdrawn from courses due to lack of academic progress or suspension due to student conduct issues, including plagiarism.
Administrative Class Drop. Successful completion of course prerequisites is essential for enrollment in subsequent courses that require prerequisites. Students who fail to pass a prerequisite course and are registered for the subsequent course should contact their academic advisor.
International students must obtain approval from the International Center to add or drop a class .
Merely not attending a class does not automatically remove the class from a student’s record. Students who do not initiate the drop, either through the Enrollment tab at home.apu.edu or through submission of an Enrollment Activity Form, by the drop deadline jeopardize their academic record with the possibility of incurring an FN grade in a course and will be expected to meet tuition and fee obligations for the class.
Successful completion of course prerequisites is essential for enrollment in subsequent courses that require prerequisites. Students who fail to pass a prerequisite course and are registered for the subsequent course should contact their academic advisor. A student-initiated drop of a course may be requested; if a student is advised to drop the course, and does not do so through the Enrollment tab at home.apu.edu or by submitting an Enrollment Activity Form, the Graduate and Professional Registrar’s office may administratively drop the student from the course at the request of the academic department.
If you withdraw from the university and then change your mind or decide you are ready to return at a later date, you will need to apply for readmission to the university by completing the Readmission Application located under the All Forms menu in the ecampus.
If you are an active student and you no longer want to pursue your education with the university, you must disenroll by submitting a Disenrollment Request Form. You will find this form in the student ecampus, under the Academic Plan & Forms/University Forms menu, under the All Forms link.

Swap a Class. If you want to switch a class for another, use the Swap tool. Log in to home.apu.edu and select “Enrollment” in the menu. Select “Swap Classes.”. In the first section, choose the class you want to drop. In the second section, indicate which class you want to add in one of three ways:
Log in to home.apu.edu and use the Add, Drop, Swap, or Edit under “Enrollment” to make changes to your schedule.
Add your desired class to your Shopping Cart by entering the five-digit class number (if known) or by selecting “Search” to view a list of courses offered by a specific department.
SWAP: Exchange one class for another. This includes taking the same course but changing the time or professor.
Every fall and spring semester, the university sets a specific time for current students to enroll in their classes for the following semester. View your registration appointment time under “Enrollment” on home.apu.edu. Each student receives a registration appointment time, determined by the number of units the student has completed at the time of registration. Units the student is taking in the current semester do not count for this purpose.
The regulations require APU to return a portion of the unearned aid. The amount is calculated by multiplying the percentage of unearned Title IV aid (100% – 21.8% = 78.2%) by the institutional charges for the term. For example, the student had the following institutional charges for the term:
The Graduate and Professional Center Registrar’s office is responsible for the official withdrawal process from APU graduate and professional studies. Students with financial aid will have the opportunity to talk with a Student Account Specialist regarding the effect withdrawing will have upon their current aid eligibility. The process begins by completing the entire Enrollment Activity Form, also available at APU’s Graduate and Professional Center, and securing all the necessary signatures requested.
If a student withdraws or stops attending all courses in their term or does not complete all the sessions of a modular course schedule (e.g. Fall 1 and Fall 2), in some cases the student only earns a portion of the financial aid already received. If less than 60% was earned, the percentage of aid earned is then multiplied by the total amount of Title IV aid that was disbursed or was eligible to be disbursed for the term. The result is the amount of Title IV aid earned by the student.
If there were 110 total days in the term and the student completed 24, the student would earn 21.8% of the Title IV aid received. (24/110 = 21.8)
Each year, a number of financial aid recipients are distressed to learn that their aid package is being reduced due to an overaward. As required, students must inform the Office of Graduate and Professional Student Financial Services of any outside aid awards or changes in their class load. This will save the frustration and inconvenience that may result from an overaward.
If the student provides written confirmation but then fails to attend a future module, the student is considered withdrawn from the initial date of the original module.
Students who elect to withdraw (disenroll) from the university during a semester must do so by dropping or withdrawing from all of their courses in the semester and then completing the Disenrollment Request Form. If a student withdraws or is administratively withdrawn from the university, they may be subject to a Return of Title IV (R2T4) calculation.
If a student changes their mind about taking a course, or circumstances prevent them from completing a course in which they are registered, they may consider requesting a course drop or withdrawal.
The Census date refers to the point at which your enrolled credit hours are locked for Pell Grant purposes. The Census falls on the first day of week two in each semester.
An R2T4 determination cannot be appealed. The outcome of an R2T4 calculation may result in student owing funds to the university, the government, or both. For more information please read the full Withdrawal and Return of Title IV (R2T4) policy.
