In a training session you need to hold the delegates’ attention for at least a few hours, maybe even a few days, so sitting at a laptop and clicking through the slides is not going to cut it. You need to be animated and excited, don’t stick to the slides, ask questions, build rapport, ask people their opinion and uses games.
Is it likely they’ll make notes? If so your hand-out should contain reference material with room for notes, and be robust enough act as a notebook for the day. There’s nothing worse than a multiple-page hand-out that is falling apart by the end of the day. It doesn’t suggest to delegates that they are getting good value for money.
A proper introduction of the trainer or trainers gives the delegates information about why they’re a voice of authority. Hearing about their background can put you at ease and make you more willing to listen to their advice.
It’s so important for the trainers to be in the room well before anyone else arrives so they can welcome them in and start to build a bit of a rapport with the students before the course begins. If you’ve had a chance to warm to someone, you’re more likely to feel comfortable enough to ask questions.
An effective trainer is one who uses the slides to give the course a framework, but talks freely and engages the students in the discussion. Don’t be constrained to the slides; deliver what the customers want.

Not all courses can be run in a venue specifically designed for the purpose, so it’s fairly common that trainers will have to make do with a room that is less than ideal. In May 2017, the Air Force phased out its old Course 15 distance learning program and replaced it with a new NCO Distance Learning Course that was intended to make studying easier for airmen, by dividing the course into three modules with more practice questions and more “summative tests” to help them absorb the material.
Under this program, all active, Guard and Reserve airmen are allowed to attend Airman Leadership School, the NCO Academy, and the SNCO Academy prior to promotion.
Cody said the blended learning system would use technology to get education to more airmen and teach them more effectively. But the system never caught on with airmen, and grew to become a headache or even a career killer. In 2015, the Air Force had to prod tens of thousands of enlisted airmen to enroll in Course 14 and 15.
