What is a 3-gun match?

May 27, 2012 · I can't really afford to nor do I have the time to get into real 3-gun comp shooting so I decided to make my own small course so my buddies and myself (long time shooters) can have a place to compete with each other. I have a private piece of property I shoot on and played around last year with a few things in the station based shooting realm.

3-Gun course design is a tough job. How do you challenge the top shooters without frustrating the begineers. If you make a course to easy the top group are bunched together with out a clear winner. Too hard and the new shooter feels short changed from the thrill of competition. There is no scale against the field if you are one of the DNF or Max.

I think the way to make stages more difficult, to sort out the top shooters, is to design in "gear changes." A single target at an angle, with a no-shoot over it, forces shooters to slow down. The newbie can go to "granny low" to make the shot, while the GM can "second gear" it.

As one dipping his toe into three gun I'm with Patrick. I'm on the verge of getting my A card (74.4??%), but have only shot one three-gun match, and I don't care if I couldn't make a few 300 yard shots. It meant I have to get out and practice some with the rifle, and get a new narrower front sight for my california AR (mini-14).

One thing you might consider is bringing standards type stages to 3 gun matches. I'm surprised you don't see more of it. I could see a Vice-Prez @ 25 yards with rifle/ shotgun (slugs). If you want to get some more separation between the shooters, make the round count 3 or 4 round with the rifle. That should give you some points separation.

I agree with the gear changes. Another way to challenge but not hurt is to use more paper targets at longer range. In my area anything beyond 60 yards or so will be steel. Yes paper puts some demands on ROs and tapers, but the steel here is all knock-down, so you have to walk out there anyways.

The match should be about overall shooting skill, not an argument as to whether Shooter X has a handicap of 10% or 5%.

Where did you find those targets? They might be the ideal practice target for me....

How to practice shooting a rifle?

When practicing with your rifle, start shooting from a bench off your elbows until you can easily shoot a 3 MOA group. From there, go prone and get the same group sizes. From there, go to sitting, kneeling, modified prone, and try to keep everything within 4-5 MOA. From standing, try to keep everything within 8 MOA.

Can you put 6 beginners in a match?

If you put 6 beginners in a match but one of them is half-decent on reloading their shotgun, they’ll blow all the other beginners away. Shotgun reloading speed makes up for a huge amount of time in shotgun stages and should be a big focus for new 3 gun shooters.

How to practice long range rifle?

For long range rifle practice, I usually set up the following targets. One Colt Speed Plate Auto Popper at about 200y, an IPSC Auto Reset at 300’ish, and a Flash Target at 350y-380y. Spread them out left to right as much as you can. Once you have them all set up, practice engaging them from left to right, right to left, near to far and far to near. After you’ve done that from the prone position, do it off of a barricade in the reverse kneel position. This will cover just about every position you’ll ever see in a match (with some slight modifications of course).

What is the most perishable skill?

Last but not least is the pistol. Other than the long-range rifle and shotgun loading, pistol is the most perishable skill. It requires constant practice to maintain a strong skill level. This is where the 5” knock over plates and cardboard target stands come in. Putting six 5” knock over plates and four or five cardboard targets out will really work a wide array of skills. It makes you focus on the tough shots as well as pushing your speed for fast doubles on the cardboard targets. I usually put the knock over plates between 10y and 15y, and I’ll intermingle the cardboard targets in with them from 2y to 25y. The good thing about paper targets is they force you to call your shots. You don’t get the “ping!!” when you hit them. You’ve got to be sure of your shot and move on.
