  • In Canvas, click the Courses menu, and click “Remove me from unneeded courses”.
  • A list of your unpublished and migrated courses is displayed.
  • If you have more than 10 courses, type part of a course name and click Search to filter by a course name or semester.
  • Check the courses from which you want to be unenrolled.

From your course home page, click the settings tab at the bottom of the course menu. Once in settings, there will be options for both deleting or ending the course on the menu on the right side of the page. Click whichever one to end or delete your course.

How do I permanently delete a course?

To unpublish a course, please follow these steps below:

  • Navigate to the course management page.

Removing a course from the Dashboard simply removes it from that view, it will not remove it from the all courses page.

Unfortunately, we don’t delete courses from Canvas. We recommend unpublishing the course or simply following the directions above to remove it from your Dashboard. ​​​​​​​

Which courses display on your Dashboard when you log in can be managed by clicking the ‘Courses’ icon then selecting ‘All Courses’. The stars on the left are the way you select which courses you want to see when you log in on the Dashboard.

Colleague Created Course shells with Students

The courses for each semester or term will be managed within the system. You will eventually see them removed from your list. While the system will add and eventually remove these you may want to use the ‘Favorites’ star feature from above to remove course shells you are no longer actively teaching from the Dashboard.

What to do if a student drops a course on Canvas?

If a student has dropped your course, but their name still appears in your Canvas course, instructors should fill out this request form to ask for that student to be removed or deactivated.

Can you drop a course on Canvas?

Students may need to drop the course at a future point, however, and will be dropped from Banner, but are not automatically dropped from Canvas. When a student has dropped, instructors do not have the rights to remove students in Canvas.

How long does it take to remove a course from Canvas?

Once the student removes the course, their enrollment in the Canvas course will be automatically removed within 2 hours.

What happens after the add drop?

After the close of the add/drop, there is a flexible grace period † to allow registrars to work through any paper-based enrollment changes. Once the registrar's office completes that work, extraneous visitor enrollments will be removed automatically. Announcements are posted within Canvas and on the Canvas login page when visitor removal will occur.
