A piano or keyboard is all that's required. No prior musical knowledge is necessary.
Beginner and Intermediate; Composers, Producers and Songwriters who feel stuck with their music theory, writing and piano skills.
For as long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with deconstructing, creating and learning music more effectively.
Great review of the theory but more importantly, the lessons show how these ideas are put into music.

If you have piano students who are rapidly losing interest or who are unimpressed by the repertoire choices you present, then composing can be the tool that flicks the light switch of motivation to the “on” position. The ability to create short, easy pieces put your students in the driver’s seat and gives them a sense of ownership over their own learning.
Composing is the most useful, yet least utilized skill in a piano teacher’s toolkit. It has the ability to improve note reading, home practice, and self-confidence. It can, quite literally, save a student who is
When encouraged to experiment, piano students learn to see the piano as a tool for creativity and self-expression rather than simply as a means of replicating the music of others.
When your students create these mini-measures, they will be actively listening to melodies and note combinations and assessing whether or not they are creating music that sounds pleasant and fits with the corresponding piano pieces. These are essential skills that all capable piano players must develop.
But despite all of its benefits, composing is rarely taught in piano lessons. Most teachers do not have experience composing, and therefore, do not believe they have the skill set to teach students to compose . Composing can be difficult to teach. However, using composition as a teaching tool, and teaching kids to compose ...
Using Composing As A Theory “Crash Course”. It is impossible to predict the musical areas in which your individual students will excel or struggle. It is even harder for piano publishers to make these predictions. For this reason, finding a piece of piano repertoire that reinforces a student’s specific struggle can be almost impossible.

1) Start With the Melody. You don't have to come to the piano with an entire song already in your head before you start composing. Just start with one simple melodic phrase. That melody will be the centerpiece for everything else in your composition. It's the foundation and the focal point of your piece.
Now and then, I'll write a song in two hours flat, but that hardly ever happens (like maybe 4 times in 20 years). Most of my songs take 6-9 months to complete, and some songs have taken years to finish. If it takes you awhile to finish your composition, don't get frustrated. If you need to, set the composition aside for awhile and come back to it later. Sometimes if you take a couple months off of a song, then come back to it, you'll find it easier to actually finish it.
Be careful with this. Remember, the melody is (typically) what makes or breaks your song. It is also the device that holds the various elements of your composition together. Finally and most importantly, the melody is the part of your song your listener will remember.
Finally, have a digital recorder of some sort right beside you so you can record your ideas while you're still sitting at the piano. There's nothing more frustrating that having a great idea, getting interrupted, and then forgetting it. With a recorder handy you can take the two minutes you need to record a rough-draft of your melody and come back to it later if need be.
How to Compose Music. What does it take to learn composition? The fastest way to learn composition is to memorize small fragments of music, and then learn to change and combine those fragments in very specific ways. The process of changing it, actually forces you to understand it.
This is actually much closer to the way composer were traditionally taught (composers like Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Ravel, Debussy and of course…. Bach). When I started Art of Composing in 2011, I had a loose idea of the things I needed to learn. But it wasn’t very clear in my mind.
Let’s be deliberate about this. Your goal is to compose for me, a 1 note piece of music.
November 14, 2016 at 10:23 am. Arrangement is a term that is somewhat ambiguous. Arrangement can refer to the form, it can also refer to the orchestration , and it can also refer generally to what instrumentation is used, and not how they are used (orchestration).
Harmony– how notes and lines sound together at the same time. Form– how any section of your piece can sound like a beginning, middle, or end, and therefore how you can organize it in unique ways to tell your unique musical story. There is obviously much more to it, but that’s for later on.
Step 2 – The process of composing, in one note
Some music theory is extremely valuable for understanding why the music has the emotional effect that it does, by focusing on the critical elements of the music: Melody– the effect of the single line and how composers have tended to handle the problems of writing melodies.
Major chords in pop music frequently use sus2 voicings for a warmer sound. To create a sus2 voicing for a major chord, simply replace the 3rd of the chord with the 2nd of the chord instead. For example, B♭major is played B♭- D -F whereas B♭ (sus2) uses B♭- C -F. Similarly, F major contains F- A -C compared to F (sus2) which contains F- G -C. However, regarding our specific progression, we still want to keep that F/A sound from step 1. Although the F (sus2) voicing replaces the A in the right hand with a G, the bass note will retain the note A. As a result, this chord is more appropriately called an F (add2) because the 3rd is still present in the bass.
One of the main components that distinguishes a chord progression from an accompaniment pattern is a sense of groove. In the example below for instance, a simple groove has been added to begin to build out an accompaniment. In addition, open 5ths have been added in the left hand for a fuller sound.
You can explore even more incredible-sounding substitutions in our full-length courses on Passing Chords & Reharmonization ( Level 2 , Level 3 ).
As a result, this chord is more appropriately called an F (add2) because the 3rd is still present in the bass.
There are times when you will need a fuller piano texture, especially as additional instruments enter the groove, such as an acoustic or electric guitar. You can add further momentum to your piano accompaniment with a single-note driver in the left hand.
In addition, open 5ths have been added in the left hand for a fuller sound. This approach is the perfect first step for an amateur player. However, if you are looking for a pro piano accompaniment sound, you’ll likely find this accompaniment comparable to a mannequin on display in a T-shirt only.
Basically, we simply replace one of the B♭ chords with a Gm chord. While you could use a Gm triad, it is common in pop music to add the 7th to the 2 chord making the substitute chord a Gm7. Notice below that these chords are quite similar.
