Submit the request to their College Dean's office. If granted, the College Dean's Office will authorize the drop using the Late Drop Petition in OASIS and a PTD number will be generated. For classes taken Pass/No Pass, a letter grade of C or F can be assigned retroactively if the P/NP grading option makes the student ineligible for major qualification, major grading requirements, or graduation. This change can only apply to the most recent quarter(s) where a pass/no pass grade was earned.

In courses listed in the UC Davis General Catalog as being letter graded, “passing quality” means “of D- quality or better.” This standard holds in such courses whether or not the student has elected to take the course on a Passed/Not Passed (P/NP) or Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory (S/U) basis.

Classes completed with P/NP grading in Fall 2020 and Winter 2021 were allowed up to a maximum of 16 cumulative units, over all quarters enrolled, not counting units earned for P/NP-only courses (e.g., ENG 199) or any P/NP units completed during Spring 2020 or Summer Sessions 2020.
For Spring 2020 through Winter 2021, only, the P/NP grading option is allowed for all courses offered by the College of Engineering and any other coursework completed in satisfaction of engineering degree requirements.

A Fall or Spring semester that does not yield grade points will lead to probation. For example, if a student takes all courses on a pass/no pass basis, receives all incomplete grades, earns all IPs or NRs, or a combination of the above will fail to achieve a GPA and will be placed on probation.
Guidelines for pass/no pass grades. Pass (P) grades require a level of performance at least equal to a letter grade of C- and will earn units, but no grade points. No pass (NP) grades represent a level of performance at a D+ or lower. No units or grade points will be earned. Neither P nor NP grades will affect your GPA.
Taking a course pass/no pass means that you will either receive a grade of a P (pass) or NP (not pass). Pass grades will earn units but will not be calculated into your cumulative UC Berkeley GPA.
While on academic probation, you must take all coursework for a letter grade unless you enroll in a course that is only offered P/NP. Pass (P) grades may account for no more than one third of your total units required to reach the 120 overall minimum (more information in FAQs).
