Changing Number of Credit Hours.
The number of credit hours that may be transferred is determined on an individual basis. The following limitations apply: No more than 40 percent of hours required for a master’s degree can be transferred from another institution or another college at UIC.
To enroll in courses at UIC for the first time, students complete the following steps: Take the Pre-enrollment Evaluation Program (PEP) tests (not always required of readmitted or continuing students); Participate in academic advising during New Student Orientation and get approval to register; and
Students planning to audit a course must complete the following procedure: The opportunity to audit is allowed for degree-seeking students and UIC faculty and staff. Those outside of UIC must first gain admission as a nondegree student before requesting to audit a class.

A maximum of 30 credit hours is allowed. The full list of CLEP tests available at UIC is available online. The Office of Testing Services administers CLEP tests on campus.
Courses may be added/dropped online using the XE Registration system (available via my.UIC.edu) through the second Friday of fall and spring semesters, or through the first Wednesday of Summer Session 1 and first Friday of Summer Session 2.
Students who can devote full attention to their studies usually enroll for 12 to 16 credit hours each term.
12Maximum Credit Hours Undergraduate students can register for up to 12 total credit hours–either as a combination of courses taken in the 4-week and 8-week sessions, or just courses taken in the 8-week session. Graduate students can take up to 20 credit hours over the summer.
Full time (12 or more hours) undergraduate, full time (9 or more hours) graduate, and full time (12 or more hours) professional students are assessed a transportation fee for the CTA U Pass.
In LAS, courses with grades of A, B, or C grade may not be repeated. Courses with grades of D or F may be repeated once without written permission. In all cases, the original grade for the course and the grade for each repeat will appear on the transcript.
Though many people do take 18 credits in a semester, it is your individual experience and no one else's. An 18-credit semester may be worth losing some sleep over — but it's not worth losing your sanity. Pay attention to warning signs that you're doing too much and stop yourself short before it worsens.
Since most schools have two semesters per year and degrees are designed to take four years to get, that comes out to 15 credit hours a semester. Breaking it down further, most college courses at schools with semesters are worth three credit hours. So on average, you would expect to take five classes a semester.
Most students (and most parents) don't realize that in college, a C is a great grade. When the student who pulled a 4.0 in high school ends up with a 2.5 GPA in their first semester in college, their shock is real.
The FAFSA completed for the academic year 2020-2021 applies to Summer 2021. All degree-seeking students who have a FAFSA on file with Office of Student Financial Aid will automatically be considered for financial aid after they register for summer courses.
After classes begin: To withdraw from all of your courses after the second Friday of the Fall or Spring term you must submit a Term Withdrawal Request at http://registrar.uic.edu/registration/term-withdrawal. Consult your college for more specific withdrawal policies.
Whether you're already enrolled at UIC or you attend another university, use the flexibility of summer at UIC to achieve your goals. Choose from nearly 300 courses. Enroll in the 4-week session, 8-week session, or both.
An official (original) transcript showing grades for transfer work outside of UIC ( not necessary for UIC transfer credit). A certification from the registrar or college dean of the applicable institution stating that the courses are graduate-level and were not used toward fulfillment of the requirements for a degree.
A Graduate Petition for Transfer of Credit Toward an Advanced Degree form is required for all requests for transfer of course credit, including the transfer of credit earned as a nondegree student at UIC, or other UIC courses. (However, a petition should not be used for granting 32 hours Advanced Standing Credit for a previous master’s degree – see above for procedure). The graduate program evaluates the student’s petition and makes transfer recommendations to the Graduate College. The petition must include the following:

Credit earned through the CIC Traveling Scholar Program is not considered transfer credit. If a student is approved as a CIC Traveling Scholar, graduate credit earned is automatically counted as degree credit in the student’s program. Graduate Catalog Transfer of Credit. If unsuccessful while trying to add or remove a course (s), error message (s) will appear at the top and status will say “Errors Preventing Registration”. Contact the course department if it is a “Departmental Approval Required” or “Class Restriction” or “College Restriction” error message.
Changing the number of credit hours for a course can be requested. If approved, you follow these steps to make the changes for your account:
Students who will not be graduating in the term for which they are requesting an overload must wait until the add/drop period at the beginning of the term in order to request course overload approval.
Considerations used in granting a credit overload include academic history (which may include the following): GPA. Number of terms completed at UIC. Course loads (number of hours and rigor) in previous semesters.
The Word version of the course request form can be used to gather the required information, but it is not submitted to Academic Programs (AP). View instructions for each item on the form. New courses must be approved by the offering unit (e.g., department, division) and the college, following procedures established by the college.
This new course is being proposed as a requirement for the B.S. in Health Information Management, which is currently under revision. This course has been developed in response to new accreditation requirements.
If a student will be able to receive credit for both the existing course and the new course, you should create a new course with a new course number (regardless of whether the existing course will be dropped or remain active). If a student cannot receive credit for both versions of the course, simply revise the existing course.
A University of Illinois System identification card (“ID”) is University of Illinois System (“System”) property. This ID is issued to help identify its valid holder, and it must be presented upon request.
International students who wish to register for less than 12 semester hours should speak with an advisor in the Office of International Services (OIS) prior to dropping courses or under-enrolling. In order to maintain immigration status, permission must be granted by OIS in advance of dropping below full time.
For the purpose of determining eligibility to register, continuing students are defined as students whose enrollment at UIC has not been interrupted for two or more semesters in succession (summer session excluded). Students who lose continuing status are considered “former students.” Should they wish to reenroll after having lost continuing status, reapplication and readmission to the university are required.
A student who places into ENGL 161 via the Writing Placement Test and subsequently passes ENGL 161 with a grade of B or higher may receive academic proficiency credit for ENGL 160. If the student passes ENGL 161 with a grade lower than B, the ENGL 160 requirement will be waived, but proficiency credit will not be granted. To be eligible, students must enter UIC in Fall 2021 or later, place into ENGL 161 via the departmental placement test, and earn a B or higher in ENGL 161 .
The Illinois Department of Public Health mandates that all students in on-campus housing, born on or after January 1, 1957, entering a postsecondary institution are required to present documented proof of immunity against measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, and diphtheria as a prerequisite to registration. The On-Campus Housing Medical Immunization Form, required for student completion, is mailed with the student’s acceptance letter. In addition, students may request that their Illinois high school health record, the Certificate of Health Examination, be forwarded to the university at the time that the high school transmits the official high school academic record.
After a student is admitted to the university, the Office of Admissions sends an admission packet, including a Letter of Admission and an Intent to Enroll form to the student. Enclosed in the packet are the instructions for placement tests, registration, and housing.
The university reserves the right either to deny admission or readmission to any person because of previous misconduct that may substantially affect the interest of the university, or to admit or readmit such a person on an appropriate disciplinary status. The admission or readmission of such a person will not be approved or denied until his or her case has been heard by the appropriate disciplinary committee. This applies to persons not now enrolled in the university who might apply for admission or readmission. A favorable action of the appropriate disciplinary committee does not abrogate the right of any dean or director to deny admission or readmission on the basis of scholarship.

A minimum of 120 credit hours are needed for graduation. In order to be a full-time student, you must register for at least 12 credit hours in the fall semester and 12 credit hours in the spring semester.
A semester hour is the university’s unit of academic credit. Typical courses are three credit hours. Many science or math courses are four or five credit hours because they include a discussion or lab component. A minimum of 120 credit hours are needed for graduation.
College Requirements. All students must complete University Writing, Foreign Language, and Quantitative Reasoning requirements. Placement tests should be taken in each of these areas before attending Orientation so that you are able to enroll in the courses you need to ensure a timely graduation.
FAFSA processing time can take 2-3 weeks before a financial aid notification is issued.
A: Students may freely add/drop courses until the 10th day of the semester. If a course is dropped during the add/drop period, the total number of credit hours is reduced which may result in an adjustment of tuition and fees along with eligibility for certain types of aid.
Financial aid disburses no earlier than 10 days before the beginning of a semester. Disbursement dates and other important dates and deadlines can be found on the SFAS Calendar. After the initial payment of financial aid, additional payments occur regularly throughout the semester on Wednesday and Friday mornings.
If you are not eligible to file a FAFSA or the Alternative Application for State Financial Aid, you can apply for a U and I Cares Emergency Grant via the Dean of Students Office. Please note the amount of funding is limited, and available on first-come, first-served basis. Approval is not guaranteed.
