Is Ramsey's work good for teens?

So I would not hesitate to recommend Ramsey’s work in general and these look like a great option for families with teens and tweens who are already at home with extra time to do something they wouldn’t normally be able to fit in their schedule. The courses are self-study with auto-graded assessments and include lessons on budgeting, saving, and investing.

What are the Baby Steps in Dave Ramsey’s Plan?

Dave uses a seven-step approach to eliminate debt known as the baby steps. Once you become debt-free (baby step 2) and save up a three-to-six month emergency fund (baby step 3), people can usually start moving to more advanced personal finance guidance. For example, in baby step 6, the goal is to pay off the mortgage. Even though we decided to pay off our mortgage, the same may not be best for others depending on an individual’s unique set of circumstances (my opinion, not Dave’s). An earlier blog post of mine went into more detail on the baby steps featured in Financial Peace University.

Why is Dave's plan important?

This is arguably the most important lesson in the series as it provides a road map to pay down all debt. This is also the most challenging lesson where many families get stuck or give up. Make a commitment to follow Dave’s plan and you’ll be amazed at the life changing results.

What is Financial Peace University?

Financial Peace University is an interactive nine-week course facilitated primarily by weekly videos featuring Dave Ramsey. The course materials went through a significant upgrade in 2019. While you can purchase the course material and take it yourself, I’d highly recommend seeking out a small group to go through the course together. The real magic of the course comes through the small group discussions, which also create accountability. It’s similar to the Weight Watchers approach, creating a small community of individuals who hold each other accountable. After all, personal finance and diet have similarities. The overall concepts are simple, but the actual doing is hard.

Who Participated in Our Financial Peace University Class?

I don’t want to give away much information about other families in the class. However, I think it’s appropriate to reference the success of our group in aggregate terms.

Is Dave Ramsey successful?

Dave Ramsey has been more successful than just about anyone at encouraging a diverse audience to eliminate debt and live a more purposeful life. There have been many conversations in the personal finance community about how to better reach the low-to-moderate income population. My suggestion is usually to start with Financial Peace University as the class starts with the personal finance basics. Dave is effective in rolling out basic personal finance principles such as budgeting in an inspiring way.

Is Financial Peace University Biblical?

Yes, and no. But mostly yes. Dave is not shy about sharing that Financial Peace University is based on biblical principles. His story is that after going bankrupt earlier in his life, he turned to the Bible to help better manage his finances. What he learned eventually turned into Financial Peace University.

How many hours does Dave Ramsey take?

Dave will try to help anyone in any situation. For three hours every weekday, Dave Ramsey takes calls from people in all kinds of financial turmoil. He’s heard it all: debt collections, repossessions, bankruptcy, foreclosure—Dave will try his best to help absolutely anyone. And much of it is solid advice:

How to pay down debt in the snowball?

The debt snowball can be inefficient. Mathematically, the most efficient way to pay down your debt is by paying off your highest interest debt first. Ramsey advocates paying off your smallest debt first, then adding what you were paying towards that debt to the payment for your next largest debt. In this way, you eliminate the number of debts you have at a faster rate (even if your total debts aren’t paid faster).

What does Ramsey believe?

A believer in self-reliance. Ramsey sees more Americans predisposed to economic dependence—and believes political promises are to blame. Ramsey warns that no political savior—Republican or Democrat—is going to solve all the economic problems or save people from themselves. “I now have to spend more time talking someone into believing they control their own destiny than I used to,” he says.

What is Ramsey's failure to use opportunity cost?

Ramsey ignores opportunity cost. Ramsey’s shoot-from-the-hip advice often lacks mathematical integrity. One example is his neglect of lost opportunity cost. In a nutshell—when you use money for one purpose, you have to consider what else you might have done with it and what return it could have earned elsewhere.

What is Dave's theme?

An advocate for gratitude and contentment. One of Dave’s themes is that more “stuff” won’t make you or your family any happier—that you can choose to be happy now. “When you choose gratitude and seek contentment with what you have, you’ll be much happier. Plus, your family (and your bank account) will thank you later.” We’ve got no argument with that!
