Before changing lanes, look into your rearview mirror for nearby vehicles and over your shoulder to check for blind spots (see the yellow area in the image above). The shaded areas are your blind spots. Watch for hazards–Look beyond the vehicle ahead of you.
Explanation : If your brake pedal suddenly sinks to the floor, try pumping it to build up pressure. If that does not help, use your emergency or parking brake - but use it gently. Shifting to a lower gear will also help your vehicle slow down.
Look first. Use your signals to show which way you are turning. Check your side and rear view mirrors for approaching cars.
Generally the ideal speed at the apex of a right turn is 10-15 MPH. The ideal speed in the middle of a left turn is usually 15-20 MPH. The ideal turn speed will vary depending on the width of the road, degree of the turn and weather conditions, but the speeds stated above will be accurate about 85-90% of the time.
six zonesTo be a safe and defensive driver, you must remain aware of all six zones and be mindful of what other drivers may or may not do. It may sound overwhelming at first but it doesn't have to be, as both your side mirrors and rearview mirror are there to assist you!

If you are 21 years of age or older and you drive when the level of alcohol in your bloodstream reaches .08 percent , you are legally DUI, or driving under the influence. [2] If a person of average size and weight were to consume one alcoholic drink per hour, he or she would most likely not be in danger of getting near .08 percent. Conversely, increased consumption of alcohol over a short period of time will most likely lead to an illegal BAC. For example, a 150-pound person consuming four alcoholic beverages (each with one ounce of alcohol) over a two-hour period would have a BAC of .086 percent if male or .105 percent if female. This exemplifies the need for individuals of varying weights and tolerances to know their own limitations. However, there is no safe way to ever drive while under the influence. Even one alcoholic drink can make you an unsafe driver on the road.
An impaired driver may have consumed only trace amounts of alcohol, yet still beaffected significantly as a result. Alcohol affects individuals in different ways, with minimal amounts sometimes doing substantial damage. Alcohol alters behavior and causes a driver to become mentally and physically impaired.
Under the Zero Tolerance law, it is illegal for anyone who is under 21 years old to drive with a BAC of .01 percent or higher. [1] If a police officer suspects a driver who is under the age of 21 of drinking alcohol, that person is required to take a Preliminary Alcohol Screening Test [PAS].
A simple fact of life: If you break the law, you must pay the price. However, if you drink and drive, you may also pay with your life.
