Hunter courses typically consist of eight to 10 jumps that are more organic in form and generally lower in height than fences used in jumper classes.
A typical hunter course consists of approximately 8 jumps that simulate natural obstacles. The jumps are set at a consistent height, ie: 2'0", 2'3”, 3'0”, etc. The courses are carefully measured and should have a set amount of strides in between the jumps.
A handy hunter is a horse or pony that is very easy to maneuver around a course in a ring or in the hunt field. Different elements that might be seen in a handy hunter course include, but are not limited to, fences at the gallop, rollbacks, trot fences, a gate to open and/or close from the horse's back, etc.
Medium Pony Hunter - Over 12.2 to 13.2. Large Pony Hunter - Over 13.2 to 14.2. Small Hunter - 16 hands & under. Small Junior Hunter - 16 hands & under. Large Junior Hunter - Over 16 hands.

When you enter the arena, present yourself to the judge and the steward, who will make a note of your number. Move off and establish a good canter rhythm before you begin jumping. Ride the course as if it were a normal jumping class – maintain rhythm and balance to help your horse jump to the best of his ability.
