A course site isn't visible to students until the instructor manually publishes the Canvas site. If the semester/term has already started and you are definitely registered for the course, contact your instructor and ask them to publish the course. You may have previously set your Courses List to show other courses.

How do term dates, course dates, and section dates work in Canvas? Term dates, course dates, and section dates are very symbiotic. All of them flow together in all aspects of Canvas. Various dates allow different users to participate in the course. The hierarchy of dates include the following: Section dates can override course dates.
If a course is unpublished or does not include a link [1], students cannot have access to any course content until the start date of the term.
Administrators have control over when specific users can participate in the courses. Unless otherwise specified, Students inherit the term start and term end date, while Teachers, TAs and Designers dates inherit a whenever start date to the term end date. Whenever means that these user roles can always access a course before the term begins.
If a course participation end date is set to midnight, a warning message displays [6].
Note: Only admins can view the Terms page in Canvas. Instructors and students cannot view the Terms page, so admins should make sure instructors and students are aware of term dates for their institution publicly, such as through a course catalog, website posting, or other distribution method.
For example, if the term dates were August 31 to December 20 , the instructor could set access to the course a week later and end the course a week earlier. By shortening the course participation start and end dates, students will only have read-only access to the course before and after those dates.
Note: Canvas currently does not generate a warning about term dates as it does for course dates.
If a course is defined by term, course, or section dates, all enrollments are automatically concluded as defined by the term, course, or section end date. A course can also be manually concluded at any time, which affects all enrollments.
Once a course is concluded, if you do not want students to view prior course content, you can restrict students from viewing prior courses. You can also restore an enrollment if necessary.
However, as an instructor you may need to conclude an individual enrollment before the end date. Concluding an enrollment allows the user to view a course in read-only mode. This means the user will be able to access the course but not be able to submit assignments, participate in discussions, or send/receive conversation messages in the course.
You can conclude enrollments that include an SIS ID, but you cannot delete an enrollments with an SIS ID . Additionally, concluding enrollments is a course permission. If you cannot conclude enrollments in your course, your institution has restricted this feature.
To select the end date, click the End calendar icon [1]. Then select a new end date for the course [2].
Courses may be assigned to the Default Term [1] or a specific term [2]. By default, courses are set to follow the term start and end dates set for your entire institution [3].
If you cannot change what is displayed in the Participation drop-down menu, your institution has restricted instructors from modifying course availability dates.
Participation means that students can submit assignments, post discussions, upload files, or take part in any other action-based task within a course. If you set course participation dates, students can accept the course invitation, access the course, and look at content, but they cannot fully participate until the first day of the course.
If you do not want students to view any content in the course until the course start date, Course Settings also allows you to restrict students from being able to access content. You can also choose to restrict all course access after the course has concluded.
Term dates can only be modified by a Canvas admin. If no dates have been created for the term (such as when the Default Term is used), the Start and End fields will display as empty. Note: If the course is assigned to the Default Term and participation dates are set to follow term dates, students can participate in the course indefinitely.
However, as an instructor, you may need to change the participation start and end dates for your course. Dates can be shorter than or overlap the term dates.
Students: You courses will appear on your Dashboard when two conditions are met. One, the course has been published by your instructor. Two, the term has started. Your instructor can make the course available early by changing the course dates.
If there are no gold stars then Canvas will display all courses listed within above the Past Enrollments section.
In addition, Canvas includes tools tips to describe certain thing on the screen. Hovering your mouse over the stars will tell you why you can or cannot star a course.
Only your current courses can be added or removed from your Dashboard. The list of those courses appear above Past Enrollments. Any courses from Past Enrollments and below can not be starred.
Instructors: Due to frequent requests, Canvas course shells automatically appear on instructor’s dashboards several terms before they begin. Course shells can be hidden from the dashboard as desired using the instructions below.
A Canvas site is retained in the University of Pennsylvania’s Canvas environment for five years from the term during which its associated course was offered. Once five years have passed since a Canvas site was active, that site may no longer be available.
If a student does not see a Canvas site listed on their Canvas homepage, they should look for the site under their “Past Enrollments.” They can access a past-enrollment site by logging into Canvas and clicking on Courses > All Courses and then scrolling down the page to their “Past Enrollments” list and clicking on the link for the Canvas site they want to access. If they do not see a site either on their Canvas homepage or under their “Past Enrollments,” then the site is unavailable, and they will need to email their instructor to request to have this content shared outside Canvas.
Students can use the Course Content Export tool in a Canvas site to download content for offline access. For instructions, student can consult.
Faculty may choose to enable a setting that completely prevents students from accessing a Canvas site after a term ends. Students no longer have access to a Canvas site to which this setting is applied. If a student needs access to content in a Canvas site that is no longer available, they should email their instructor to request to have this content shared outside Canvas.
