An NDTA sponsored live course of 12 hours in length, such as an NDTA Seminar or Advanced Course , must also be completed. NDTA sponsored webinar (s) equaling 12 hours or more in length may also be attended. The application must be submitted within 12 months of the completion of the additional course.
Prestige of the NDT Certification credential (C/NDT) Certifications are often required by employers or state and local agencies. In some instances, CE courses used to obtain a certification are reimbursed at a higher rate. Certification Brochure.
All NDT technicians—no matter their certification level or method specialization—will have to meet certain requirements before they can officially become certified. All technicians will have to have some sort of education, whether traditional or through an NDT training program, and some work experience.
Prospective NDT technicians have a few different options when it comes to fulfilling their training requirements. Training programs can be completed through traditional colleges and universities, vocational or technical schools, commercial training companies, NDT company training departments and the United States military .
NDT training programs can vary in length. Ultimately, students need to have the total number of hours completed for their inspection method and certification level, which can range from four to 72 hours. At the same time, the institution that provides the training may have a different timeline than a different place.
Unfortunately, NDT certifications don’t last forever; technicians need to prove that they are keeping up with changing technologies and methods by becoming recertified at specific intervals. The recertification intervals vary with each level of certification.
If you are seeking NDT certification for Level II Liquid Penetrant, you would need a minimum of 12 hours of Formal Training and 210 hours of OJT. (According to the ASNT Guidelines.) However, you would need 80 hours of Formal Training and 840 hours of OJT if you were pursuing Level II for Ultrasonic Testing.
There are three test scores required for NDT Certification in each method:
ASNT publishes a document referred to as ASNT SNT-TC-1a. This document outlines recommended practices for the proper qualification and certification of NDT Personnel. In addition to having a high school diploma, ASNT recommends the following: Formal Training Time in each method in which you are seeking certification.
ASNT – The American Society for Non-Destructive Testing is one of the organizations who has created recommendations and guidelines for certifying NDT Technicians. They are based in the United States.
Formal Training is primarily considered classroom or online courses. In these classes, you will learn the basic theory and application of the NDT Method being studied. In our classes, we base the study on hands-on applications for each method. We spend a lot of time using the equipment and practicing hands-on techniques based on actual work procedures. We believe that this form of education is the best way to learn. So, without hands-on time in the classroom, the learning is all in your head. Putting your hands on the equipment every day in class is the best way to get a full understanding of how things work in this industry!
Three Tests in each method – General, Specific, and Practical
Practical Test – Hands-On test to prove your ability to apply the method to test samples or actual work material

NDT LEVEL II CERTIFICATION, SNT-TC-1A, 2016 – MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1 Organized NDT Training Program with required hours. The training program to include sufficient examinations to ensure understanding of necessary information (Section 7.0 of SNT-TC-1A) 2 Experience as per SNT-TC-1A – to be verified by Employer. 3 Eye Examinations (near vision and color contrast) performed annually (see Section 8.2 of SNT-TC-1A) . 4 Examinations conducted as per employer’s written practice – General, Specific and Practical with minimum number of questions. (see Section 8.0 of SNT-TC-1A)
Example – To be a MT Level II, an individual must have 20 hours of class room training, 280 hours of MT experience and 530 hours of total NDT experience. LEVEL I, II AND III QUALIFICATIONS AS PER SNT-TC-1A.
Level I: Qualified to perform specific calibrations, specific NDT, specific evaluations, and record results. Should receive specific instruction or supervision from a NDT Level II or III.
1. Complete the written general examination. This exam covers the basic knowledge and principles that you learned through the required coursework for your particular NDT method. The test usually includes 20-40 questions and you will use your class materials to study for it.
Some common NDT methods include Acoustic Emission Testing, Electromagnetic Testing, Radiographic Testing, Leak Testing, and Neuron Radiographic Testing. For example, if you’re training to become an MRI technician, you may need to get certified in Electromagnetic and Radiographic Testing methods.
For example, a Level I Radiographic trainee has to complete 40 hours of coursework. 80 hours are required for Level II trainees. If you already have an engineering or science degree, the hours of coursework required may be reduced. ...
Request the official certification document from your employer. Creating the official certification is the responsibility of your employer and you will obtain it from them. Once you’ve completed the initial training, examinations, and experience requirements specified in your employer's Written Practice, you’re eligible for certification.
For example, if you’re training to become an MRI technician, you may need to get certified in Electromagnetic and Radiographic Testing methods.
Pass the written specific examination. This exam tests your knowledge of the procedures, equipment, codes, and techniques required to perform your job. Your employer may have study materials for you, but the knowledge should be gleaned from your coursework and the hours of hands-on work experience you obtained through your company.
You’ll be trained by a certified Level II or Level III technician.
The NDT Trainee, Level I, and Level II. When a person starts the training and qualification process, they are classified as a trainee. Their goal is usually to become a fully certified Level I, Level II or Level III technician.
All refer to the same category of quality control test procedures that examines the integrity (or lack, thereof) of materials, components or systems without causing damage to them.
