Doing the math, the IELTS exam overall takes about 2 and 3/4 hours. Listening, Reading, and Writing take a total of 2 hours and thirty minutes. The end-of-exam interview takes up another 15 minutes or so. You don’t get a chance for a break between any section, so this timetable is pretty much fixed. Count on being in the exam for a bit less than 3 hours.
Next, IELTS Reading. This section is 60 minutes long on both sections of the IELTS. However, the division of time within the section is different, depending on the type of IELTS you’re taking. IELTS Academic contains four longer university-style educational passages. General training, in contrast, has shorter passages on average.
The IELTS Listening section is 30 minutes long. In both the Academic IELTS and the General Training IELTS, you listen to four audio tracks, followed by exam questions. This means you get an average of 7.5 minutes for each audio recording and associated question set. Next, IELTS Reading.
The exact nature of the shorter task is different, though. In IELTS General Training, you write a letter to someone . In IELTS Academic, you need to summarise the information you see in a chart or table. Going into the IELTS Writing section, think about what task will be the hardest to do quickly.
In both versions of the test, you’re given one hour to complete one shorter writing task of at least 150 words, and one longer essay of 250 words or more. The exact nature of the shorter task is different, though.
An eternity, if you have test anxiety! Joking aside, IELTS exam duration is quite manageable. Let’s look at the exam timetable. Knowing your test day tasks and how long they take can “de-mystify” the test. This can reduce your test anxiety, and help you walk into the test centre with confidence.

Rachita Mitra. IELTS is one of the most important English proficiency tests and IELTS score is accepted widely for study, job, and immigration purposes. IELTS is scored on a scale of 0-9 and to get enrolled in the top universities, 7 of up IELTS and score will be required.
You have to revise everything well before appearing for the actual examination. Make it a regular habit of revising everything that you have learned earlier at the end of the day. With this, you can memorize it for a longer time.
That sounds obvious but few students understand that IELTS is a test made to measure English language ability and it will do just that – measure your ability.
To move from intermediate to upper-intermediate you should plan to spend at least 1 – 2 years. For many students, you are more likely to need 3 – 4 years of intensive study to reach upper-intermediate level.
Students who want to get a 6.5 need to spend some time (at least 6 months to a year) improving their English in order to have a good chance of getting that score.
Most examiners would say that the link between level and band score is not totally accurate . An intermediate student could easily get around a 6 and and upper-intermediate could get around a 7. Second, the jumps between levels get larger. It takes longer to go from band 6 to 7 than it does from band 5 to 6.
This means your skills have to be well-rounded. You won’t be able to get away with really good listening and reading scores and poor speaking or writing scores. If one of your skills is weaker than the others, it might take you longer to make sure every skill is good enough.
But, many students are able to get 7 overall (or even higher) because of the difference between skills. Most students have stronger listening and reading skills so it is very common for students to get 6s for speaking and writing and 8s for listening and reading, which averages out to a band 7 overall.
For these students, unless if they need a score below a 6, I always recommend improving their English, not studying IELTS. The good news is that going from pre-intermediate to intermediate level is very possible. It is not as easy as going from elementary to pre-intermediate, but most students can do it by working hard within 1-2 years.
But IELTS simply offers a snapshot of a learner’s language level. An advanced user of the language will get 6.5 or higher. With a pre-intermediate level, they will get something like a band 4. If there were easy tricks to fool the exam, it would stop being used by governments, companies, schools and universities to determine someone’s language ...
Most universities ask them to get a 6.5 in IELTS, this equates to C1 level of English, or an ‘Advanced’ level. If the student takes the test and they get band 4, this suggests their level is A2/B1 or something like ‘pre-intermediate’ in general English courses (see here for a comparison of the IELTS band and CEFR).
Course B. 20-40 hours: a medium length course with the content of course A but also with some extra focus on key areas of weakness – this will depend on the students but could be extra work on essay writing for the writing test or skim reading for the reading test.

Like with any skill, some students are better and quicker at learning languages than others.
If their general level is much lower than that required, it’s a very long journey for them. Many students believe there are some tricks to taking the IELTS, some secret key that will unlock the higher bands, if only they could find the right teacher. But IELTS simply offers a snapshot of a learner’s language level.
