The examination artwork does not have to relate to your AS Coursework in any way, but there are obvious advantages to having some overlaps. It is worth remembering that although the examination is worth more marks than the Coursework, there is far less time to complete it.
At AS Level, students are required to have an extremely competent final piece. The Art examination is fifteen hours long for good reason. Many students find the fifteen hours not enough.

The exam paper is a list of topics, from which you must select one. Some topics are very broad and have a lot of room for personal interpretation (i.e. “ on the edge ”) while others are narrow and suitable for those who like more direction (i.e. “ an arrangement of several different items of footwear ”).
Tracing is rarely allowed and only in specific situations, for example, when incorporating a motif that had been designed earlier as part of a Graphic Design submission. It is not acceptable for a Painting and Related Media student to bring an enlarged photograph to the exam and trace it.
CIE recommends that the 15 hour examination be broken into shorter sessions lasting no more than 3 hours at a time, with the whole exam ideally completed over three consecutive days. Once the exam is over, work can be dried, sprayed with fixative, trimmed, mounted, ceramics fired, labelled etc, prior to posting away.

Before considering what to teach, you need to consider WHO you are teaching. To be successful in the art room, your students need guidelines, rules, and expectations. Many art teachers have a whole list ready to go when students walk into their rooms. But, I take a different approach.
Giving students open studio days is good for everyone’s soul. It makes for a lively and fun day of experimenting with media and reminds kids that there are really no mistakes in art. Plus, they can use what they learn through experimentation in their future work.
One of the best ways to teach color theory is to have an open studio day where students can experiment with a variety of media. Once they create mud, they learn pretty quickly what colors don’t work well together. After they experiment, I talk about the color wheel and all that’s involved with color theory.
You don’t need a dedicated studio to run your own art classes, although it does help! But whatever space you choose needs to look presentable to your course attendees. This means clearing away all your “life” clutter, cleaning the surfaces, laying down any protective clothes and placing examples of your work where it can be seen.
Get some flyers printed up that explain when and where your classes will be run, the cost, the details of the project, and how a client could go about booking a class. Be sure to include lots of photographs of different finished projects so that potential participants can see what they will be making.
Now you’ve got the necessary signups, you’re ready to run your first class! Don’t be nervous—it’s all about having fun. A few weeks or days before your class, practice making your project with a friend, and notice the areas where she has trouble or gets stuck.
