Two flags flutter in the breeze on top of what used to be the coastguard station at Menie, on the Aberdeenshire coast in north-eastern Scotland. From this buff-coloured block of 1950s architecture, there are stunning views over Donald Trump’s golf course, across marram grass-covered sand dunes out to the North Sea.
The Menie resort is officially opened in July 2012. It was set up to examine the arguments for and against what Mr Trump said would be the world’s greatest golf course on the protected sand dunes. Environmentalists claimed he was overstating its potential in order to justify building part of his course on the site.
