What Is the Course Content Export Feature? Canvas supports exporting course content into an HTML format for offline viewing on a computer. This feature supports courses that use complex HTML or dynamic linking to downloaded files.
Accessed from the Course Settings sidebar, use the Course Import Tool to:
Copying content retains any links or files associated with the content, such as in an assignment.
SCORM content should only be copied within accounts that use the same key and secret configuration. When manually copying a course, the user who copies the course will automatically be added to the course with an instructor role.
Note: Importing a course more than once may have unintended consequences. If you import content into a new course, edit the content in the new course, and later import the previous content again, the imported content will override the existing content.
Assignments with a manual grade posting policy and anonymous assignments retain the manual grade posting policy and their anonymous settings as part of the course import.
Draft State settings are retained in course imports. If an assignment is unpublished in a course when it was copied or exported, the assignment will also be unpublished in the content import.
The Course Import Tool does not import user content. Note: Importing a course more than once may have unintended consequences. If you import content into a new course, edit the content in the new course, and later import the previous content again, the imported content will override the existing content.
If there is something you would not like to import, leave the checkbox blank and it will not be imported.
Previously published assignments will still be published, but they will not appear on the calendar. They will also appear in the course summary.
For example, you might want to create a course called “English G10 2016-17” to hold a copy of the files from last year if you want to have them for reference, but do not necessarily want to use the entire course this year. You can then view, edit or download the files (without accidentally changing anything from the original course) and import or upload them to your actual Canvas course later.
NOTE – you choose your content AFTER you click Import, so nothing will happen now. You will get the “select content” option later.
If you do not want the items to be visible to students, you will have to individually unpublish the assignments after you import.

To view imported resources other than a course, navigate to the feature area (e .g., Modules, Assignments, Quizzes, Discussions, Pages, or Files) in Course Navigation.
If a course uses term dates, the course will appear in the course list if the term start date is not in the future and the end date is not in the past.
If you try to import a resource that is still pending, the Import into Course button will be inactive, and Commons will display a message notifying you the resource is still processing .
Options/settings are retained in resource imports. All due dates will be removed.
Depending on how large your course is, this process may take several minutes to complete. You will be able to see the progress under the "Current Jobs" section of the Import Content page.
Custom links in your course navigation menu (created using the Redirect App) that point to content within your Canvas site are static links that do not update when imported into a new site. This means that once copied into the new course, the custom link will still point to your OLD Canvas site. You will need to manually update or delete/recreate these links in your new Canvas site. Canvas supports the ability to copy / import course content from one course to another. This functionality allows instructors to roll over course materials from semester to semester, course to course, without having to recreate a course from scratch. This copy process creates a clean version of course items like discussions, assignments, and quizzes in the receiving course site.
While the Import Course Content process brings over much of the Canvas developed content from a previous version of your course, there are a number of external applications that you may need to update separately to work correctly in the new copy of your course. After you have imported a copy of your course content, please be sure to review the " Refining and Updating Your Course" section below to ensure all components of your course will function correctly once you have copied your course materials.
