Farmer Jones abuses his power by forcing the animals to work extremely hard with no reward. The animals on the farm work for Jones as salves that will never see freedom. Even though they do all of the work on the farm Jones never thinks of giving them extra food, breaks, or even grooming them.
The rebellion occurs when Jones again falls into a drunken sleep and neglects to feed the animals, who break into the store-shed in search of a meal.
Many of the men are frightened by the organized animal defense, and the animals suffer only one death. Frightened, Jones flees the farm for good. At the start of the final chapter, after 'years passed', Jones is mentioned to have died in a home for alcoholics.

Mr Jones is the owner of Manor Farm. He neglects the animals, spends most of his time drinking and reading the newspaper and not feeding them. He is taken by surprise by the animals when they fight back against him and his men, so much so that he is thrown off the farm.

First and foremost, the pigs start changing the commandments to fit their acts and desires. In the beginning of the story, the animals decide on fair rules that everyone on the farm should abide by.
The precipitating factor is when Mr Jones takes to drinking heavily and he and his men grossly neglect the farm as a result. The animals are left unfed, the cows unmilked, and soon they can take it no longer.
