Slaves were punished by whipping, shackling, hanging, beating, burning, mutilation, branding, rape, and imprisonment. Punishment was often meted out in response to disobedience or perceived infractions, but sometimes abuse was performed to re-assert the dominance of the master (or overseer) over the slave.
Life on the fields meant working sunup to sundown six days a week and having food sometimes not suitable for an animal to eat. Plantation slaves lived in small shacks with a dirt floor and little or no furniture. Life on large plantations with a cruel overseer was oftentimes the worst.
Some slaves were willing to risk their lives and families, while others were not. Many and perhaps most slaves were governable during the war, especially in the early years. Escaping slaves who were caught on their way to freedom were usually very harshly dealt with and frequently executed.
In most places they worked as artisans and small retail merchants in the towns. In many places, especially in the American South, there were restrictions on people of color owning slaves and agricultural land. But many free blacks lived in the countryside and some became major slaveholders.
Enslaved Africans were also much less expensive to maintain than indentured European servants or paid wage labourers. Enslaved Africans were often treated harshly. First they had to survive the appalling conditions on the voyage from West Africa, known as the Middle Passage. The death rate was high.
Slaves strove to adapt to their new lives by forming new communities among themselves, often adhering to traditional African customs and healing techniques.
Slavery cause Civil War because they were being treated unfairly by the South and the North didn't like that. States rights is when a state abides by its own rules. Missouri was allowed to enter the Union as a slave state. California had to decide if they were going to be a slave state or a free state.
Instead, freed slaves were often neglected by union soldiers or faced rampant disease, including horrific outbreaks of smallpox and cholera. Many of them simply starved to death.Jun 16, 2012
African Americans played an important role in the revolution. They fought at Fort Ticonderoga and the Battle of Bunker Hill. A slave helped row Washington across the Delaware. Altogether, some 5,000 free blacks and slaves served in the Continental army during the Revolution.
In 1860 they numbered 18,647, among 357,456 whites and 331,726 enslaved people, or 5 percent of the free population. The changes in New Orleans were even more dramatic, as the free Black population in the city declined from about 37 percent in 1830, to 6.7 percent in 1860.Feb 18, 2022
