Sections can be moved from term to term or course to course. If section enrollments need to be moved, such as for cross-listing a section into another course, section enrollments should be moved before students submit any coursework, as course participation cannot be transferred across sections.

Can course dates be set to override term dates?

By default, course dates default to the term dates [2]. However, course dates can be set to override the term dates or compliment the term dates. Both admins and instructors can manage these dates.

Open Course

In Global Navigation, click the Courses link [1]. Your courses will be organized by published courses [2] and unpublished courses [3]. To open an unpublished course, click the name of the course [4].

View Confirmation

A message will appear at the top of your screen confirming the publishing of your course.

Unpublish Course

If you need to unpublish your course, click the Unpublish button in the sidebar. Students who already received course invitations will not be able to access your course.

Step 1

When you first create your course, you will have the option of adjusting the default Start and End dates. Your students will not be able to see your Canvas course outside these dates.

Step 2

After you’ve created your course, you can adjust the Start and End dates from within Canvas. In your course, click the Settings button.

Step 3

Enter the date when student access to your course should Start. By default, courses start two days prior to the first day of class to give students time to review materials ahead of time.

Step 4

Enter the date when student access to your course should End. By default, courses end three weeks after the last day of finals to give your students time to review their grades and download course materials.

Step 5

Ensure the option for Users can only participate in the course between these dates is checked. If you uncheck this option, the start and end dates will no longer have any effect on course access, and Canvas will act as if there were no start or end dates for the course.

Step 6

Scroll all the way down and click Update Course Details to save your changes.

Publishing your Canvas Content and Setting Course Availability

You’ve migrated your course completely, checked all your assignment settings, created your custom grading scheme, and are ready to begin your first semester as a Canvas instructor! When you reach this point, don’t forget the most important final step: publishing your course to make sure that students can access it.

The Difference between Published and Unpublished

Once all of your content is created and organized in the Modules Tab, you need to be sure that it is all correctly published in order to start your courses off successfully! Any material that is unpublished in your canvas course will not be visible to your students.

Which Content Should be Published?

Within Canvas, publishing needs to happen on several levels: individual content, complete modules, and the whole course. Make sure all of the following items are set to be published for your students so that everything that you want them to see will be visible on the first day of classes:

Setting your Course Availability

In addition to publishing your course, you can also adjust the set start and end dates of your course if you would like your students to be able to access it before or after the official session dates. Default course start and end dates reflect what is set in the course catalog within myFSCJ.
