Repeating a Course If a student registers for a course and receives a grade and the course is one for which credit hours have previously been awarded at either UGA or another institution, the student will forfeit credit for the previous course.
If a course is repeated, we will use both grades. As well, we only review transfer work with specific course titles, course numbers and credit hours. Does UGA use my plus/minus grades from my previous college?
For questions regarding UGA’s receipt of transcripts from other institutions, please contact the Undergraduate Admissions Office at 706-542-8776 or the Graduate School Admissions Office at 706-542-1739.
Unofficial transcripts can be viewed by former students by reactivating their student account at UGA. To reactivate a student account, please email [email protected] and include full name, MyID, date of birth, and a statement requesting reactiviation of the student account.
Individuals who are unable to place a transcript request online may submit a transcript request and payment via mail. Please note that requests received by mail will have an increased processing time. Current or former UGA students should complete the UGA Student Transcript Request Form .
Generally, a previously passed course can be repeated only once and the course be included in determining the student's enrollment status.
Retaking a course may raise your student's GPA (grade point average). In many schools, if a student retakes a course, the most recent grade will replace the lower grade in the student's GPA. The earlier, lower grade will remain on the transcript, but will not be included in the GPA.
As a result, “Pass/Fail” grades can be retaken as their cumulative GPA will not be affected. If students retake a course in which they earned an “F” and withdraws (“W”), the original “F” grade remains for grade point average calculations towards credits attempted and credits earned.
If a student registers for a course and receives a grade and the course is one for which credit hours have previously been awarded at either UGA or another institution, the student will forfeit credit for the previous course.
Fill in the Previous Course Totals with the TOTAL GPA HOURS and the TOTAL QUALITY POINTS from your unofficial transcript online or from your official transcript from the Records Office, Student Services Center room 101. Subtract each repeated course's GPA HOURS and QUALITY POINTS.
The second grade always replaces the first grade. However, you can retake a class and get a worse grade. For example, if you have a D (a passing grade) and retake a course and receive an F (a failing grade), you now have a failing grade in the course and will have to take the class for a third time.
Retake The Course Some schools will allow you to retake a course for a better grade and will delete the F from your transcript entirely. Others will allow you to re-take the class for a higher grade but will keep the F on your transcript, though will not calculate it into your GPA.
A failing grade will likely hurt your GPA (unless you took the course pass/fail), which could jeopardize your financial aid. The failure will end up on your college transcripts and could hurt your chances of getting into graduate school or graduating when you originally planned to.
Even if you do fail, you can retake the class and ask for help. Although it will negatively impact your GPA and could affect your financial obligations, you can bounce back. Start by asking for more help and studying differently or harder if you retake the course. Most importantly, don't give up.
Repeat & Retake of Course(s) A student obtaining “F” grade in any course in any Trimester will have to “Repeat” the course with full payment of tuition fee for that particular course. Students desiring to improve their grade(s) may again take up course(s) which are termed as “Retake”.

Your enrollment status for Federal Student Aid (FSA) will be recalculated if you enroll in a course that cannot be included in determining your enrollment status. This in turn may result in a reduction of your FSA eligibility for the term and a requirement to repay funds disbursed to your account. Non-federal student aid such as the HOPE ...
You have passed the course with a D- or higher grade. You can attempt the course one additional time. This repeat limit applies even if on your second attempt you earn a failing grade (F) or earn a grade that is lower than what is required for your degree program (earned a C-, but a C or better is required).

Students must have at least one complete year of full-time college enrollment resulting in 30 or more transferable hours delivered on their official college transcripts by the transfer application deadline to be considered for transfer admission to UGA.
Advanced placement credit listed as specific courses on a college transcript may be transferable. Students who have officially achieved Second Year status (sophomores) and who were classified as full-time during the preceding academic year and who maintain a cumulative grade point average of 2.0 may enroll in courses taught on a pass/fail basis in accordance with these conditions:
Complete the Pass/Fail Option Request form online, print and sign the form, and then take it to your academic advisor. Before submitting the form, students are expected to already be registered for the course in the standard grade mode.
If a student needs to revert to the standard grade mode, the Office of the Registrar must be notified before the end of the drop/add deadline. After the drop/add deadline, you may not change the grade mode and you may not receive a letter grade under any circumstances .
A student who earns a “U” in a Pass/Fail course is not eligible for Presidential Scholar or Dean’s List in the term in which the grade is assigned and also is not eligible to graduate with First Honor Graduate status.
Courses taken on a Pass/Fail basis beyond this limit will earn institutional credit but will not count toward graduation. Once the drop/add period is over, a student who has registered for a course on the Pass/Fail option may not for any reason change to A – F grading, or vice versa.
Retaking courses does not look bad. As a matter of fact, retaking becomes instrumental to your overall performance if you perform better than the original attempt.
You can retake a college class for a better grade. This possibility, however, depends on your college policies about retaking courses.
Retaken classes show up on the transcript. All attempts of a class, whether two or more, will be manifested on your official transcript.

The semester grade point average (GPA) is the sum of all grade points earned in a semester divided by all credit hours attempted for letter grade. Credit hours in courses in which marks of WP, W, I, S, U, V, K, NG, ER, NR, or WM were assigned are excluded.
The I grade is not included in the grade point average computation. This grade indicates satisfactory participation in certain required courses. Normally, S grades are given in a limited number of professional, seminar, or graduate-level courses. Credit is included in hours earned.
A student will not be approved for graduation if he or she has a grade of I which, when changed to a recorded grade, could cause the student’s grade point average to fall below the minimum required for graduation. This policy applies to students for all degrees conferred by the University.
A grade in a course recorded by the Office of the Registrar cannot be changed except in the following circumstances: A symbol of I not removed after three semesters (counting summer school as one semester) becomes a grade of F (or U for a course graded S/U).
Dropping a Course. Withdrawing from a Course. "Dropping" a course means you dropped it before the end of the drop/add period. A student "withdraws" from a course after the end of the drop/add period. Credit hours for dropped courses are not included in your hours of enrollment for financial aid. Generally results in a grade of W, WP, or WF.
Withdrawing from all courses can affect a student's financial aid eligibility as cited under the preceding topic. In addition, when a student withdraws or is withdrawn from all his or her courses prior to completing more than 60 percent of the term, federal financial aid regulations generally require the student to repay a portion of the federal student aid received during the term. The amount of any required aid repayment is calculated by UGA Student Accounts according to the federally prescribed formula.
