The first Disney theme park opened 60 years ago in California and was the brainchild of Walt Disney himself, who was motivated by the lack of entertainment options available to him and his two young daughters.
In the spring next year, media giant Walt Disney will open one of its most ambitious international expansions – a Disneyland theme park in Shanghai. It will be home to attractions based on Disney’s biggest franchises, such as Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean, but the real magic will be behind the scenes.

To surmount this, the boat is instead winched up an incline which begins with the scenes of plundering and ends with a drop into the caverns of defeated pirates. It also saved money by not needing to dig a hole for a basement.
There’s little doubt that this idea stemmed from the initial concepts from the failed Virginia park. “When Barry Braverman was put in charge of California Adventure, he was told to take the stuff that was figured out for Disney’s America and retool it for California Adventure,” says Hill.
